34 wk scan- what to expect/questions I should ask?

Tomorrow I have my next antenatal clinic appointment and scan at 34wks4days. I think most others have theirs at 36 wks but for some reason mine is early. I plan to ask if they can give me an estimated birthweight of baby and I know the scan will reveal position baby is lying in. Just wondering, from those of you with experience of this, is there anything else I should be finding out, questions I should be asking? Thanks.

Where are you marshmellow that does a routine 34 week scan?

LoveActually · 15/01/2009 11:52

I had a 36 week scan, but only because we are taking part in a medical study, not because of any complications. To be honest they do pretty much the same stuff as they do 20 weeks scan, baby looks the same too, except much bigger of course.
It depends why you are having the scan. Like I said scans are normally carrried out at 12 and 20 weeks.

Never heard of a routine 34 week scan. Only 12 and 20 weeks (and not everywhere does both of these). Baby can still change position at 34 weeks, esp when its not a first one.

Well you could ask them to switch over to 3D if that's an option as you should be able to get a good idea of what your baby will look like (if it's in the right position and not too jammed in!)
Otherwise, I would just ask open ended questions to get the sonographer to discuss what they can see.
Are you having your baby privately?

Pinkmarshmallow · 15/01/2009 12:03

Oh, I thought 36wks was normal everywhere? I'm in Northern Ireland btw. For all others here 36wks is normal... I know a few other women who are due 2 wks before me (that makes them 36wks now)and they have their appointments tomorrow also at the same hospital. I don't know why mine is at 34wks, at the front of my maternity notes where there is a schedule of appointments, it says hospital ante-natal clinic at 36wks. I count myself lucky then that I get an extra sneak preview of baby then, if all u girls don't get this appointment?!?!

no it's not private, this is on the NHS. and yes, it would be lovely to see it on 3D... good idea!

They are often checking that the baby is not breeches. They will probably do routine measurements - head circumference, femur length, abdominal width and an estimated weight.

"Breeches"!
Am getting a wonderful vision of the sonographer showing me a pic of my baby with little trousers on!

I had a 34 week scan with DS to see if low lying placenta had moved ( it had- thank God). Don't expect too much as I'm afraid that at 34 weeks Baby is so big that you can actually see less than at 20 weeks. At my 34 week scan they said my baby was estimated at 6lb, given that they are supposed to put on half a pound each week after that I would have had an 11lb baby! He was 8lb 3oz!
Apparently guessing birth weight from scans is like calculating what you weight by measuring your thigh bone whilst you curl up in the bath !
Just enjoy the sneek preview.
