Hello, I started to bleed yesterday. It started watery red and is now dark brown with small bits (really sorry if TMI). Its not much, but enough to worry me. Fortunately I am able to rest as I've been signed off work with a bad back. After flapping for quite a bit, I finally pulled myself together and rang the local antenatal assessment centre (thanking the Lord it was before 1700) and they told me to ring my GP for a referral to the Early Pregnancy Unit. I rang my GP clinic late yesterday afternoon and my GP said there was nothing he or anyone else could do and I'd have to ride it out, telling me it could go one of 2 ways- well obviously duh. He wouldn't refer me to the EPU. Now I know nothing can be done and I could be fine, or not, but all I want to know is, is there a heart still beating and is everything ok or not? I hate the idea of having to wait 3 weeks for my 12 week scan (thats if I can get it at 12 weeks). I haven't done anything today, because I've done the classic hoping it will go away trick.

Sorry for the long post, but I'm on my own and worried. The long and short of it is, can I go to the EPU without a GP referral? The website tells me where my local ones are, but there is no mention of whether I can call or rock up without GP say so.
Me xx

It seems to vary
Some of the London ones you can just turn up and wait
You can try calling them first

God, I am really sorry to hear this! I really hope it is just a bit of bleeding. I had a mc at 6.7 and when I started bleeding the midwife told me that if you get pain or clots you have probably lost it.
She referred me to the EPU for a scan, which confirmed that it had gone.
I don't think you can self refer but I may be wrong.
My advice, and it's sneaky - go back to the GP, preferabley a different one. Make sure it's an urgent appointment! Pretend you are in a lot of pain on one side - i.e can hardly walk, doubled up!! They will refer you for a scan if they think you may be having an Ectopic!
Worth a try!??

i'd go in. it could be implantation bleeding...if its brown its a good sign. happened to me at 11 weeks and spent far too much time reading the brown discharge threads.. don't do it to yourself and do try to rest and not to worry if you can, I know its not easy.

thanks guys, There are 2 near me, I'll call them in the morning. If its implantation, its the 3rd time. One at 4 weeks, then 6 weeks now this. The little thing is obviously destined to be a miner or something. The walking in doubled up shouldn't be a problem as my lower back is totalled anyway!

Managed to get a GP referral over the phone for the EPU. Got an appointment later on today. I'm not holding out much hope though. The bleeding is getting prgressively worse. We'll see.

Hiya,

Had the scan- this is what the notes say:
An interuterine gestation sac is seen within the fundal endometrium. a yolk sac is seen within the gestation sac. The sac has a volume of 0.6cc, very early gestation (5/40). No fetal pole is seen. Rescan advised in 2 weeks to assess viability. Both ovaries appear normal, no adnexal masses or free fluid seen.

In other words, they cannot see the source of the heavy tissuey bleeding and think this will peter out in a day or 2 (still cramping badly, but the blood is now all blood and no tissue.)

Option 1, I've had an unexplained bleed (because my doc wouldn't refer me ealrier in the week arghh), but I'm definitely not 10 weeks pregnant- despite not having AF since 7 Nov. The preg is not viable- it died at 5 weeks and is festering and I'll have to wait 2 weeks to see- then they'll take steps to clear me out. It could have been 2 sacs (twins) and they're both non viable, ones just clinging on longer, but not growing Or

Option 2- pregnancy from 7 Nov terminated at about 5 week point (just when I discovered I was pregnant), it has sat festering away and has only just ejected itself this week. Meanwhile, I got immediately pregnant having lost pg No 1 without knowing it, and am now 5 weeks pregnant with No 2. The gestational sac that they can see is apparently totally clean, not bleeding, ruptured or anything.

A second scan at the end of the month will tell. Has anyone else had this happen to them? Any happy endings re Option 2?!

Not that I'm pinning my hopes or anything.

Oh Verified, what a horrible time for you.

I don not mean to be blunt but to be perfectly honest, To get pregnant with another baby, if the lost one hasn't come away yet, would be incredibly unusual, if not impossible i'm afraid. The uterine lining would not be receptive to a new pg, asi t would be thinking it was still pg with no. 1 if that makes sense.

IMO, and experience of missed mc, i'm afraid, that I would think that this sounds very like what has happened. Sometimes it just takes a while for our bodies to accept that the pregnancy is over. Often when the mc is missed, the foetus seems smaller than it should have been.

I would go back and ask for perhaps hcg levels to be tested, and or another scan this week. A week is a long time in an early pg, and you should be able to see some kind of advance if the pg is viable.

Perhaps things will happen naturally if the pg is over and you'll know for sure.
I'm really sorry and i hope things work out for you. x

Oh dear, this is awful for 2 reasons.

  1. you now have to wait to find out exactly what is going on.
  2. you don't understand the jargon. Nor do I, I'm afraid.
I agree that it is unlikely you fell pregnant with a pregnancy already there, even if it wasn't viable. Maybe you just missed a period and are actually not as pregnant as you thought. Some women bleed during pregnancy and don't miscarry. At 5wks they would see very little. Try and stay positive and see what the next scan brings. A ray of hope?? Let's hope so, fingers crossed x
