I started bleeding on boxing day when I was 11 weeks pg, I saw a doctor and he said that my cervix was closed but booked me in for an early pg scan for the following Tuesday. Everything was okay at that scan and the baby measured perfect for the dates.

The bleeding slowed down Tuesday evening and and stopped on Wednesday, I had nothing then until last Saturday when I flooded. I went back in and again the doctor said my cervix was closed and booked me for another scan on Monday. The scan on Monday was fine and again.

I had my ante natal appointments after Mondays scan and saw my consultant. I was still spotting but not a lot. He said if I was to have anymore bleeding to contact the maternity reception and ask to be put through to the EPU.

I started bleeding again yesterday afternoon, but not a lot. I carried on but it got heavier last night and is even heavier this morning.

I have rang the reception and the lady there told me that I cannot speak to the EPU and to go to A&E.

I have already seen A&E on boxing day, why should I waste mine and their time when there is no need.

I don't know what to do.

I'm so sorry you are going through all of this.
What I would and have done, is either go to A&E as suggested, they will take urine and blood sample to test your hormone levels as pregnancy hormones increase by day, so they will be able to see if they are still increasing as may send you to EPU from there, or call your gp and explain what is happening and what you have been told and get gp to write a referral letter for you to take to EPU today, or call EPU again and hope someone else is on the phones or do you have a contact number for your consultant, ring him/her directly and explain.
Good luck

DustyTv · 07/01/2009 08:54

I don't have my consultants direct number unfortunately, I really don't want to bother A&E they are busy enough without having to see me when I should be able to see the EPU.

I need to get hold of the number for the EPU and not go through the reception I think. But I can't find it in the book or on the website.

If I ring the hospital main switchboard would they give me the number for EPU or just transfer me?

OP posts:
littleboyblue · 07/01/2009 08:58

They'd probably just transfer you, but it's worth asking them for the direct number when you call.
If you've had your booking in with mw, is it not on your mat notes? What about calling the labour ward? They are normally quite sympathetic or ask to be put through to maternity triage?
Understand you not wanting to bother at A&E, but you should get seen tbh. If you go there, at least you are at the hospital. Can you not ask when call front desk to be put through to the comsultants office?

littleboyblue · 07/01/2009 09:00

I've had 3 mc but not been through anything like you, 2 of them were straight forward natural bleeds but the first was a mmc, I was lucky to have a beast of a gp that shouted until she got her way!

DustyTv · 07/01/2009 09:05

I have the number for the maternity ward that I will use for the birth. I phoned them on boxing day and they said that they don't deal with any problems like bleeding until the pg woman is 20 weeks.
It must have changed since I had DD who is 13.5mo now as I remember I had a very small bit of brownish bleeding at 16 weeks with DD and I phoned them and they told me to come in right away.

I think I am going to try to speak to the EPU directly then if not A&E it is, but I still feel that A&E would be a waste of resources.

Thank you for your advice.

Oh, and I don't know if it means anything but the bleeding is like a period, but not very heavy IYSWIM. I have period type pains but they are bearable and the blood isn't bright red, it is kinda a reddy brown colour.

Ok. Goodluck. If all else fails, call mat ward back and beg them to help you.

DustyTv · 07/01/2009 09:30

Okay I got through to the EPU and I also got their extension number incase I need them again. I have an appointment for 10.30am. So now I've got to get DD up and fed and dressed as she is still asleep. My mum is picking me and DD up at 10am.

Thank you for your advice.
Got to go now.

Good luck Dustytv.

littleboyblue · 07/01/2009 12:29

Hope all went ok. X

DustyTv · 07/01/2009 17:14

I went in to the EPU and they scanned me, they were very good. The baby is still with us, the little heartbeat going strong. I apologized for bothering them as I felt bad because they were really busy. They said not to be so daft and if I have any more heavy bleeding or any other problems to just ring them and go in.

I feel relieved, but I am in a lot of pain and I am still loosing blood, some clots but only tiny. I have pain radiating down my right leg, not sure if that is from all of this or what though.

Thank you all for your advice.

Hope you are ok Dusty. I bled with every pregnancy, i lost one (but i knew it didnt feel right from the start) and the other 2 and are 4 and 5 yrs old!!

Stay positive xx

littleboyblue · 07/01/2009 17:25

I'm glad you got seen Dusty and baby is there. A friend of mine bled all through and I've heard that it can be like that.
Take it easy.
You can safely take paracetamol for the pain, but might be worth a trip to gp too if it continues. x

bronze · 07/01/2009 17:28

If you need any heavy bleeding reassurance stories just give me a shout.
Hope all stays well

DustyTv · 07/01/2009 17:46

Thanks everyone. I am trying to feel positive. I am trying to take it as easy as I can with a 13.5mo to take care off. I am very lucky that DD is really good and not too much of a handful.

My anxiety keeps peaking at night when there is nothing to occupy my mind IYSWIM and my OCD is getting OTT again. I may have to go and see my counsellor again to talk things over. I find it helps to relieve the OCD slightly.

Just trying to keep myself occupied.

Bronze, any reassurance stories would be very welcome, thankyou.

Dusty glad to hear all went well at the scan. I don't know if it's any help but what you describe sounds very like my pg with dc6.
I bled until around 18w, small clots/pains included. Things started to settle somewhere between 16-18w and once past 20w settled completely. Dc6 is now 12yo.
Hopefully, yours will settle soon.

DustyTv · 07/01/2009 19:12

That is so reassuring to hear juuule. I can make my peace with light spotting and the pain if I otherwise feel okay, it's the clots and the heavy bleeding that take my breath away when I see/have them.

Hi hope you're okay

I had quite a few very light bleeds up unitl I was 11 weeks - I'm 14 now

There isn't anything anyone can do accept to scan you every time it happens. At my EPU they said I could keep going back up till 14 weeks. Aftyer 14wks they can monitor babies heartbeat instead of scans.

I was advised not have sex till after 20 week scan

Everything was okay for me and no more bleeds so far so fingers crossed for you.

I read somehwere that with bleeds once they have seen the babies heartbeat after 6 weeeks 90% of people go on to have a healthy baby

DustyTv · 08/01/2009 15:48

Gillyan, yes I am okay thank you. I am feeling much better today, i still have the bleeding, heavy sometimes and not so heavy at other times. Not too much pain now either so I am feeling a bit calmer.
I like the sound of the 90% odds of having a DC at the end of this pg after the bleeding.

MsG · 08/01/2009 19:24

Hi Dusty,

Hope things are OK for you - sounds awful. I haven't any experience of this kind of bleeding (I have had a m/c but this was early on and there wasn't really any doubt about it) but I do have OCD so if you ever want to talk about that I'm a good listener! xx

brettgirl2 · 08/01/2009 19:42

The odds are much higher of successful pg if the scan result is later (ie 11 weeks).

Did they give you any idea of what was causing it at the scan?

Smithagain · 08/01/2009 19:50

I know how you feel, having bled on and off at around the same stage of my second pregnancy. I had bleeding every two or three weeks, including one very dramatic bleed. The baby in question is now a strapping three year old, but I still remember the emotional rollercoaster.

Things settled down for me at around 18 weeks. I still don't know what caused it. But I've spoken to several others since who've had similar experiences and healthy babies.

I hope things turn out OK - and don't worry about badgering the hospital/midwife. I'm sure they will understand your need for reassurance.

Thank you.
The MW said that she could see no cause for the bleeding on any of the scans (I have had 3 now) she also said that all looked well and the baby looked fine.
My consultant said that it could just be one of those pregnancies, and sometimes they just don't know what causes the bleeding. He said not to have any penertrative (SP?) sex but he will review that again once he has seen me at 20 weeks after I have had the anomoly scan.

I am trying not to get too 'close' to this PG IYSWIM as if I do end up loosing it I will cope better that way.

Mum keeps telling me to take to my bed or not move from the house, I know I need to take it easy but I cannot take to my bed when I have a 13.5mo who needs me. I think I would go stir crazy if I did not move from this house. I need to get out and about to keep my sanity in check. Also DD is so much easier and so much less whinny when we go out, the poor little girl would be so bored if we stayed in all day long (although at the minute we cannot do much until tomorrow as my front door is broke and needs a new lock, which is being ordered and fitted tomorrow lunch time)
