Prawns

It says in the blurb that I can eat them if they're thoroughly cooked. Does this mean I can eat cooked prawns cold (i.e., the usual pink prawns you get fresh or frozen) but not raw (uncooked) as sushi or that I have to re-cook the cooked prawns and have them hot?

think you can eat the cold already cooked prawns - if you cook them again they will be absolutely gross.

you cannot eat raw prawns.

I have been eating prawns (one of my favourite foods) and have not had any problems, but I do take precautions: buy them from good supermarkets, and eat them on day of purchase etc. I would not order them in restaurants.

You're fine with prawns as long as they're cooked, whether hot or cold. If they're cooked they're pink (even the sushi kind is cooked) - you would not want to eat a raw prawn!

I'm not wild about sushi so that's no real loss to not be able to eat it (I'm sure I've seen uncooked prawns in it before?) but that's fab news about the cold cooked prawns! Prawn cocktails and sarnies it is! Thanks!

Yes - shop bought prawn cocktails and sarnies are great.... but make sure you do not have homemade ones with homemade mayonnaise (not safe) - fine with readymade mayonnaise (which uses pasteurised eggs).

I have some Helmanns. That should be OK I think?

Yum!

but how do you get the yolk out of the shell, Christiana?

your call but go carefully

lastboxoftampons · 06/01/2009 12:22

I was told Hellmans is fine. The eggs are pastuerized.

MrsBadger · 06/01/2009 12:23

yes yes hellmans and all shop bought mayo is fine

I was disputing Christiana's assertion that homemade with raw eggs was fine 'bvecause the yolk is a long way from the shell'

lastboxoftampons · 06/01/2009 12:26

Oh, that wasn't directed at you MrsBadger - just a general comment as no one had mentioned store bought is pastuerized.

And I take back what I sad about eating raw prawns - I would never want to eat one, but apparently there is sushi with raw prawns in it and it's a delicacy in Japan. Our local Wasabi shop doesn't have it though!

Had prawn & avocado sarnies for lunch. Yum! Thanks for the info, girls!

Yep there is sushi with raw prawns.

I have had it (not whilst pregnant, obv).

Raw prawns taste like old glue.

Do NOT go there.
