Sleepless nights- what do you do about it?

Well it's gone 6am and I've been awake since 1:30am. This is the first night to be this bad. From about 20wks I've had an average of one night a week that I have to get up, get a milky drink, read for about an hour and then I go straight back to sleep again. But tonight I'm at my wits end. So far, I've:

  • eaten something cos I was starving
  • had a hot milky drink
  • read boring stuff to make me sleepy
  • went back to bed to try to sleep
  • cried my eyes out
  • tidied the living room
  • sat down to try and sleep that way as my hips are aching so much from lying in bed
  • tidied the kitchen
  • puked (sorry, tmi!)
  • tried to tire myself out on MN

Aaagh. What do all you folk do to help you sleep at night?

Morning! Been up for several hours now so know what you mean though to be honest I try to go with the flow and don't stress about sleeplessness any more - that can make it worse IME.

I tend to get up, have a (pref milky) drink and some toast or banana, and get comfy on the sofa with some blankets, strategically-placed cushions and a book. I always find reading (ie. a book, not internet) will eventually do it (and the change of scene, ie. from bed to sofa) provides some essential relief for the aching hips! Have consequently got into a routine of going back to sleep on sofa from about 7-9am as a result.

Oh, and putting the heating on seems to work, too. Something sleep-inducing about those extra few toasty degrees..

I took to reading harry potter by mobile phone light, it didnt help me sleep but it did help pass the time.

I have the most terrible nights sometimes and wonder how I'll get through the day. Think it's natures way of preparing us for all the sleepless nights with a new baby. I've given up fighting it now, just go with the flow and nap whenever I can, like when ds goes for a nap or is watching In The Night Garden etc.
But IME all of that if I fell asleep now I'd have 5 hours, and if I fewll asleep now I'd have 4 hours....just gets your mind stressed and keeps you up longer. Agree, get a blanket and your book and lay on the sofa.
