Had morning sickness with ds.

Much much worse this time round. Everyone's saying it's because it's a girl. (Don't know yet, only 7 weeks!)

Is there any truth in the old wives tale?

Hyperemesis with ds

Poppet45 · 02/01/2009 17:45

"New research again highlights link between blood sugar levels and sickness rather than anything to do with gender of baby."

I'm not sure that the link between blood sugar levels necessarily negates a link between sickness and the gender of the child.
What if the sex of the baby is having an impact on blood sugar levels? The sex would be an indirect cause.
I'm trying to remember my zoology degree so bear with me, but if you look at evolutionary biology male mammals take dramatically more energy from the mother than females... because in animals like dogs etc the mother can be carrying a litter from more than one dad simultaneously and its in the male y genes' interest to compete not cooperate with each other, as not all y's will be related. All females get the x from the mother so it's in the x chromosome's interest to cooperate with mom as she passed the gene on. Did that make sense? Anyway that bigger energy demand is one reason why in some animal societies females lower down the pecking order (deer) tend to have females not males, and even in humans, there's a provable bias for single mums to be more likely to have girls than boys, mother nature trying to help out?
Possibly the biggest off-topic ramble ever... really sorry! But I think babe's sex could have an impact on our symptoms.

Eek sorry for the long post!

I was hospitalised with hyperemisis, weeks 9-15. Everyone said it was a girl. Was a boy.

MrsSeanBean · 02/01/2009 18:47

Nausea from about 4pm, sick several times most evenings from week 9 - approx wk 14 with DS. Had eveninsg curled up on floor in bathroom as pointless being anywhere else. Have been put off getting pregnant again in case it's a girl and worse. I am a real wimp with sickness.

mrsbabookaloo · 02/01/2009 21:19

Are you a real wimp MrsSB? Or is it just the blardy worst thing ever and we're made to feel like we should just deal with it.

Yack. I'm 16 weeks and just coming out of the worst of it with second pg, and will not be doing this again.

SparkyFartDust · 03/01/2009 08:33

sympathy to all of you suffering at the moment. It is awful. Hope the sickness abates and you can enjoy being pg again.

SparkyFartDust · 03/01/2009 08:34

and Poppet that's really interesting stuff.

CoteDAzur · 03/01/2009 09:11

I had no morning sickness with DD. Just a bit more sensitive to smell, and avoided the cheese section in supermarket for a week or two.

Bump is a boy and I had quite a bit of nausea this time. Still wasn't sick, though.

AprilMeadow · 03/01/2009 09:22

I had morning sickness with both mine although it was far worse and lasted longer when pg with my dd. With ds i had it from about 6-12wks and dd from 3-17wks.

InSearchOfLostKeys · 03/01/2009 09:30

Sickness with my DD and DS exactly the same, from about 5wks preg through till about 12-13wks, then the nausea miraculously stopped both times. Thank god.

lea1980 · 05/01/2009 11:59

no sickness with ds but it has just raised its ugly head this weekend!!!!
ive just read:

Morning sickness might have evolved to ensure pregnant women do not digest too much unhealthy food, say scientists.
They found evidence that nausea and vomiting in pregnancy is associated with high intake of sugar, alcohol, oils and meat.

In contrast, cereals were least likely to trigger sickness.

The University of Liverpool analysis of 56 previous studies in 21 countries appears in the Royal Society's Biological Journal.

Until recently, it was thought to be simply an unfortunate by-product of dramatic hormonal changes during early pregnancy.

However, research has suggested that morning sickness might have positive consequences - such as a reduced risk of miscarriage.

Toxins

The researchers believe it is possible that the pregnant human body may have evolved an aversion to foods containing high levels of toxins, and that this may have carried over into modern living.

They suggest that the body might reject meat because of the relatively high risk that it might harbour disease-causing agents.

Conversely, the low level of plant toxins in cereals may make them particularly unlikely to trigger nausea.

However, they say the body's rejection of sugars and oils is less easy to explain.

Lead researcher Dr Craig Roberts said: "While there may be no particular harm in eating, say, meat, now that we have refrigeration and best before dates, our bodies may be pre-programmed by evolution to avoid these particular foodstuffs in the first trimester.

"It may be that the nausea women feel towards certain foodstuffs could be helpful, and that although it is inconvenient and miserable, their nausea could be nature's way of avoiding problems in pregnancy for both mother and foetus."

i got it off the bbc health site!

Stretch · 05/01/2009 12:01

DD1, awful sickness, hyperemesis, hospitalized.
DD2, just as bad,
DS, not quite so bad, managed to walk etc...!

shelsco · 08/01/2009 16:26

I'm pg with DS4 and each time I've got a bit worse. Only felt a bit sick with DS1, worse next time and so on. Each time people have said it's bound to be agirl this time as you're mre sick with girls except MW who said prob a boy (which scan says it is) as more sick with boys. Don't think any link to gender, just depends on your own reaction to hormones each time!

wasabipeanut · 08/01/2009 16:29

It is bollocks. Had hideoous sickness all day long from about 6 -15 weeks with ds which peaked about 10-12 weeks.

Had no real sickness yet bar the odd funny 5 mins but am only 7 weeks.

RedOnHerHead · 08/01/2009 16:32

DC1 - felt sick until i was 13weeks, but never physically sick
DC2 - felt sick until 12weeks - fine until 13weeks - physically sick every day from 13 weeks and even sick straight after birth.

also - gained about 4 stone with DC1 and only 10lbs with DC2

both boys

so nope - everyone said i was having a girl on ds2 - even the midwife said here she is - as "he" was born!

Jojay · 08/01/2009 16:38

Sick with DS1, not sick with DS2

belgo · 08/01/2009 16:40

dd1 - very very sick
dd2 - sick
ds - even less sick

so it was true for me

LadyG · 08/01/2009 16:45

DS-not sick at all(but crippling exhaustion)
DD-moderate nausea only actually sick a few times

rooloo · 17/03/2009 19:57

hi there,
had hyperemersis with both my girls bad from 5wks till birth!!! required medication throughout.

am preg with my 3rd 8wks, on meds again still puking and have been in hosp already...wonder if it will be another girl or a boy?

hang on in there all of you sicky ladies..it rough isnt it!

MollieO · 17/03/2009 20:09

Had hypermesis with ds from 6 weeks until birth. So bad that I had a gastroscopy as they thought I had a bleeding ulcer (I didn't).

DawnAS · 18/03/2009 12:40

Certainly doesn't stand up in our family!!

Mum had 4 girls and 1 boy - no MS with any of them.

My elder sister had no MS with her DD or DS.

My younger sister had no MS with her DD.

My youngest sister is PG at the moment and has had no MS with her DS.

I'm having a DD and no MS either.

So, in our house, we've decided that it must run in families!!

xx

jeee · 18/03/2009 12:42

DD1 - v.sick
DS - v.v.sick
DD2 - not so sick
DD3 - v.v.v.sick

Make of that what you will.

Amapoleon · 18/03/2009 12:43

I had very little morning sickness with dd, in fact I worried about the lack of it.

With Ds I was as sick as a dog from start to finish and worried about that too,

CompareTheMeerkat · 18/03/2009 13:09

DS - horribly sick
DD - horribly sick

chipmonkey · 18/03/2009 14:07

ds1 horribly sick
ds2 horribly sick
ds3 horribly sick
ds4 horribly sick
If I'd had a dd I would have been either extremely well or else hospitalised with hyperemesis!
