Have just had a positive test. But have had flu and taken shed-loads of over the counter meds.

Just had a surprise positive. Very surprising - so much so that feel completely knocked for six in a partly good way and a partly oh my god what the hell has happened way.

Calculations tricky as have no idea (though a broad 7 day window) when last period started and neither dh nor I can recall exactly when this might have happened

But probably only around 5 week mark if that.

Last week I had flu and took large amounts of nurofen, paracetamol and decongestants. Now have cough and have been necking covona cough medicine like a good'un.

Is it likely that I've done massive damage in doing so?

I know the coffee habit is bad. Thankfully have felt so rotten have not had alcohol.

EEEEeeeek! Am feeling rather and a bit worried about everything.

Early days so unlikely to have done any damage imho
Congratulations (if that is the right thing to say)

Please don't worry - can you imagine how many other women have done exactly the same thing? The vast majority of women carry on as normal until they find out they are pregnant like you have and no harm is done. It is very very unlikely that any over the counter stuff you have taken would cause even the tiniest bit of harm. They only have warnings on them most of the time to cover the manufacturers because drugs can't be tested on pregnant women.

whomovedmychocolate · 31/12/2008 18:33

Paracetamol won't have done any harm

Decongestents normally stop implantation but that's about all.

Ibuprofen can cause bleeding but it would be in the twelve hours after taking it so it looks like you've got away with it.

Lay off the drugs now eh?

Don't worry about the coffee. Babies are hardy little blighters.

Great news btw - congrats!

I doubt very much that these meds would have had any affect at all tbh. It takes a while for the placenta to become fully established anyway so I really wouldn't worry. Everyone that is falling pregnant or has ever fallen pregnant at this time of year has done exactly the same as you and more, so try to relax.
Goodluck with it all and congrats to you and dh

almost a year ago t the day i as in a similar position but had also taken much stronger painkillers
ds3 is now almost four monthd and is snoring and farting next to nme

congrats
yu will be fine

endymion · 31/12/2008 18:44

Thanks all.

I think that it is congratulations!

We had this mad idea of trying for a third. Then I think the next day we both had a bit of a rethink. Too late then!

I suppose I need to revisit all the reasons we thought 3 would be great, and try and forget the second thoughts about why it'd be good to stop at two.

I was in this position with ds. I had no idea I was pregnant, had antibiotics, really strong painkillers etc whilst I was pregnant. Oh I also drank buckets of coffee, tea cola etc...

Dr advised me baby would be fine and he was, he is now 18 months.

popsycal · 31/12/2008 18:53

three is fab fab fab!!!

endymion · 31/12/2008 19:31

Well it better be!

Seriously though - I'm one of three as is dh and we'd always said we would have 3. But then dd is now 5 and a half, and ds is 3 and a quarter, and I suppose I was just thinking actually, they're at an easier age, we're more mobile, they're happy, we're happy, why rock the boat.

Anyway - is early days so am going to try and not think about it (yeah right) for a week or so. And I'm not telling anyone this time until have had first scan (again, yeah right).

I was also in this position a few years ago. I was taking a concoction of pill, co-codemol, volterol and had been drinking theodd cocktail or two. My dd is now 2 and 1/2 and has had no health problems whatsoever. Relax and enjoy your pregnancy, congratulations!
