Have taken the plunge, hope this is acceptable to everybody.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
mrsboogie · 22/01/2009 17:14

if she doesn't eat it jj send it my way please - sounds yummy.

Yeah I like Jamie too - he was annoying when he were a lad with all that mockney/ geezer boy carry on but he's better now he's a grown up. And at least he tries to change things rather than just looking down his nose in horror at the kebab-eating plebs. And his food is lovely.

I love chestnuts - can't seem to get them anywhere now Christmas is over.

BonzoDoodah · 22/01/2009 18:08

good grief you lot talk a lot .... how many pages to read ....?

MrsBoogie - if you're looking for a cheap high chair try the ikea antilop one.. here I really can't fault it... it's a tenner for teh chair plus 3 for the tray - is MEGA easy to clean (v v v important) and we can take it in the car to people's houses as the legs just twist and slot off. And it's lovely and light. Ours fits over one of the dining room chairs so doesn't take up much space.

Duchesse oooh good luck waiting for the scan ... sounds like we're only 2 weeks apart .... I had my 12 week scan last week. Was really worried but all worked out well. And you are having smell symptoms - a positive sign. I just wish I could stand coffee still - little wriggler has made me not like it ... now what can I drink???

And well done you lot on the weight loss - she says popping some more toblerone into her giant gob ... [smirk] ... the baby wants it ... honest!

BonzoDoodah · 22/01/2009 18:09

jw - should have goen to foodlife-doorstepdeliveries - they are ACE. And go for the braised red cabbage - is yum. Or just make a red coleslaw - may make the kids eat it as it's funny looking.

ermintrude13 · 22/01/2009 18:23

JJ LOL @ JW's spider tempura. (reminds me of that Catherine Tate sketch with the dimwit bigot couple who'd had a Thai tempura and chilli dip: "£11.50 for a plate of battered veg with spicy jam. The dirty, dirty b*stards". haha.

Mills & Boon, how dare you! Nothing so lucrative, however much DH tries to make me produce bonkbusters I just can't. It's a bit tricky to explain the harpist because she's not actually a harpist; that's just how she sounds to my emotionally damaged and musically sensitive heroine. There, happy to clear up the confusion

Bonzo, I found a cookie with Toblerone in Asda but it was nowhere near as good as Toblerone neat.

Tee having only seen a pic of you and bump in pink p-js, I'm now having to imagine you in a tutu - don't suppose you've got any photos you can post have you?

Tee2072 · 22/01/2009 19:32

ermintrude I actually don't have any pictures from those days. My mom had tons and then she sold her big house and rang me and said 'do you want these?' And I said nope, so she threw them away! No joke! It was so horrid when I was told I couldn't dance any more, I just sort of destroyed that whole part of my life.

johnworf · 22/01/2009 19:42

bonzo I've just looked up foodlife-doorstepdeliveries and the company we used is first on their list for Bury I'm not happy. I've just found that the clementines are moudly. I'm firing off an email tonight when K goes to bed to complain. I know it's organic but I didn't want inedible.

Thanks for the suggestions for the red cabbage. I've bastardised a St Jamie of the Oliver recipe and it's braising as I type.

That highchair looks really good and excellent value but I've kind of set my heart on the Stokke one now. I've looked at the similar and cheaper Babydan but I think the back looks too low. Not sure. But don't need it for a month or so yet anyway.

I think the spider have run away from the box to find a new home. Or, they were crushed by the potatoes. Not sure. Great idea for free protein though using the batter

mrsboogie · 22/01/2009 20:16

even if I believed organic produce was better for you (which it ain't) I would never have those boxes delivered - I couldn't bear all the mankiness and slugs and insects in my food. bleuurrghy.

Tee2072 · 22/01/2009 20:28

Agreed, mrsb!! If I wanted slugs in my food, I'd grow it myself!

jeanjeannie · 22/01/2009 20:47

Well, blow-me-down, Verity ate the fish pie and so did Iris most pleasing as it was rather fine!

Ah mrsB you disappoint me - you seem like the kinda gal who'd know how to stir fry a beetle or two

Sorry your box didn't deliver jw I've only complained twice to Riverford and boy did I get a whole host of freebies the following week AND they reimbursed the box fee too!

Am watching TV prog on value food - ugh, making me feel quite queasy...

hedgepig · 22/01/2009 20:48

Tee I have this vision of you and DH building a huge balcony extension to you flat and going back to nature .
I am exhausted I've been to baby group, had my hair cut and bought B new trainers and that has wiped me out totally. Early night I think

hedgepig · 22/01/2009 20:53

fish pie yummm I love fish pie too JJ do you have any left overs?

jeanjeannie · 22/01/2009 20:56

hedgepig am that you've fitted in having a haircut. Oh, I long for a hair cut!

NEW picture! Verity in her high chair, finishing off the pie

jw you'll notice that we've got no nice fabric bit on the chair. We did buy it - but we found with Iris that it got soooo messy we've not bothered putting it back on. Oh and we did buy the reins - and never used them either

johnworf · 22/01/2009 21:05

ha ha @ Verity's expression! If there should be a caption I'm betting it's "if you dare take this bowl off me I will scream the place down".

I was thinking of not buying the reins as at £20 they seem a bit OTT. I'll prolly get the cusion though and like you, never use it but the difference on the tripp trapp and the babydan is the back of the chair in that you can raise it for a small baby (I think).

Ok, cabbage is done and I think it's lovely. Had a bowl of it already. Gave DH a taste of it and he dislikes it very much....so freezer for some and rest for me tomorrow

I'm not bothered about the muck/insects on the food. More bothered about the clementines. I'll see what {more} freebies they can send my way.

Just watching the Dispatches program about cheap food. Yack! Knew half of it was crap anyway...now just confirmed the other half.

jeanjeannie · 22/01/2009 21:13

Ugh we've just watched that Dispatches prog too - gross. We were just saying how little we actually spend on food - most of it's veg. We do less meat now - but nicer - from a decent local butcher. That reminds me I've got some oxtail in the freezer - hoorah - stew this weekend!

Trying to work out how much weight I need to lose to be in the healthy bracket...MMmm...got to get to 10st8lbs. Suddenly that seems 'do'able!

Did I say that our new blinds came? Well, we've now got a fab, finished bay window, wooden blinds, raised ceiling and little lights to boot. Am thrilled - sitting here admiring our new purchase and DP's skilled handy work

ermintrude13 · 22/01/2009 21:23

Aw, Tee, it must have been an awful shock, to have to give up dancing. . Was it or was it going to be a career? Since I move like a fairy elephant I've always admired people who can dance! (although, someone told me that dancers who aren't naturally thin have to live on white wine and tissues, which sounds a bit miserable).

What a bind about the mould JW. I've never had a complaint about any of the 3 box schemes I've used over the years - v g service and quality in all cases and never one living creature discovered in the boxes - just a dusting of soil sometimes, on the root veg - but one gave more choice, which I liked. I am in no doubt that avoiding chemicals in food production is a Good Thing (more important in meat but still good in veg, I reckon) but don't want to wipe half a field and its inhabitants off every carrot - organic doesn't have to mean grubby and should never mean mouldy! Still, did any of the veg look like a willy? That's always fun

JJ hurrah for pie. I quite fancy some meself.

Tee2072 · 22/01/2009 21:24

Great pic JJ. Definitely one to show the future spouse!! And ooh, posh bay window now!

Haven't seen the Dispatch. Let me guess, cheap food is mostly rubbish for you, yes?

Yes, hedgepig going to put a whole farm out there!

mrsboogie · 22/01/2009 21:37

yup looks like the fish pie was well received there jj lovely pic

Because of my diet we have been having lots of soups this week - yesterday was yellow split pea and spiced butter soup, today was spicy beans in coconut milk, tomorrow is Moroccan chickpea soup and I think on Monday we had thai curry flavoured parsnip soup. All yummy all very cheap, no carbs and no meat.

johnworf · 23/01/2009 07:20

tee yup. Last nights programme was pretty much along those lines. It's amazing to see how much cheap food is out there. Sausages for 1p. Not a huge fan of sausages anyway for what they put in them.

ermintrude slightly disappointed by the mouldy clementines. I may give another small business a go next time and see if it's an improvement. I'll have another look at bonzo's link for local.

Lots of rain here today and weatherman says it's going to get blustery later. Off for Friday lunch with DD#1 and am trying so hard on week 3 to resist the lovely cake they have in M&S but it's really hard

johnworf · 23/01/2009 07:44

Ok ladies here's a comment made by a 'daily mail reader' regarding the news that 41 year old Kate Garraway is expecting her 2nd baby in August..........

"She is far too old to have a baby, I am 38 and my children are all grown-up now, the eldest being 20. How she will cope with a newborn at her age?"

I think there are some more on there along the same lines although the general mood is a positive one. Not sure what DM readers would make of us on this thread. Perhaps lock us in the tower for crimes against motherhood?!

Any openers?!

lilibet · 23/01/2009 09:12

Good Morning all

JW, not comments from the dear DM readers on the virtues (or not) of 18 year old mothers, as this woman was? Not judging but if it was a different story, it would be her that they would be condeming.

JJ fantastic picture

From someone who hasn't eaten meat for 8 years now, I know that bacon is supposed to be the thing that 'turns' most veggies, but the one meat that I miss is lamb, oh for a lamb shank, slowly braised and the meat falling off the bone. [lili dribbles on the keyboard] But then I remember and give myslef a slap.

I have a mate coming for tea on Sunday, we are going seeing Frost/Nixon and then having this. It's totally gorgeous but I have to laugh at it being described as 'bursting with healthy goodness', look at the cream and butter! I am dieting, honest!!

johnworf · 23/01/2009 09:35

lilibet that looks mighty tasty. Can I join you?

Thought crossed my mind about the 18 yo mother who had a lot to say about older mothers. I had to laugh in the court statement submitted by DSS's mother at the custody meeting last year. I was pregnant at the time and in her opinion 'far too old to have another child'. This coming from the woman who has 3 kids, 3 different dads, first at 15 and was made a grandmother at the grand old age of 33! I suppose in her world I'm ancient.

Ongoing saga with SiL who has now even got under DH's skin....won't bore with details.

Anyhoo, it's Friday and I have that Friday feeling for no apparent reason.

lilibet · 23/01/2009 09:51

With pleasure JW, Lemon meringue trifle for pud?

We had a phonecall last night from one of ds2's classmate's mum about her son's birthday. He really wants to go paintballing and it's £12 each. Seh can pay them all in but then can't afford to pay £18 to buy them the paintballs, so woudl we mind paying that?

Dh spoke to her and said she sounded very embarrassed to be asking. My thought was that if it was me I would soften the blow by saying not to get a present.

ermintrude13 · 23/01/2009 10:11

Not quite sure how these 'Everyone should have their children at 16, when of course they're mature, compassionate and patient enough to cope" folk explain the fact that female fertility continues into our forties . It's hardly a crime against nature, is it? Horses for courses - and as some of you ladies have demonstrated, you can do it very happily in your twenties and your forties.

lilibet we took the step several yrs ago of only buying meat that's properly farmed - happy pigs and all that - and usually organic, which costs a fortune and makes us eat a LOT more veg and beans than ever before as well as experimenting with Quorn and tofu and stuff. But I have always been very comfortable with the notion of eating flesh. However, I saw some lambs being slaughtered on the telly last week and I was quite upset, not in a squeamish way but in a - gnnugh, they're really small, and that method looks horrible - sort of way. I do wonder whether I'll 'turn' at some point. But would always always long for bacon...

JW at least now you and DH can bond over irritating SIL. . Hope she stops giving you hassle, or whatever she's doing, soon.
