Can anyone tell me about D&C?

SIL found out today at a scan that she has sadly lost her baby (don't know the details, but was 12 weeks scan, presumably baby had stopped growing at some point).

She has to go in and have a D&C tomorrow (great way to end the year), and I'm just wondering what support, practical or emotional, I can offer her. Is it done under general anaesthetic or anything? What kind of recovery time can be expected?

She's got a 3yo DS - will she feel well enough to care for him over the next few days? Her DH is around, but I imagine is also in pieces, so don't know how much help he'll be. Although my DS is only 15 weeks, he's pretty good, so I could go and help and take him, or DP could go and I could stay with DS.

Just wondering if I should offer really, or leave them alone... We were all meant to be celebrating new year together tomorrow, feel so sad for her. Particularly poignant as we found out I was pregnant with DS on new year's eve last year.

Oh that is sad. Might be worth posting on the miscarriage board as well.

I had a D & C (now called ERPC) and it was very straightforward. Emotionally wasn't too bad as there was an empty sac i.e. no baby. Physically I felt fine straight after, maybe a bit crampy. Not too tired either.

However as she's further along it will be worse on all fronts I would imagine.

I'm sure she'll appreciate your offer of help, and if she doesn't want you there I'm sure she'd say.
