People staring at bump?

Has anyone else noticed that "people" seem to think its fair game to stare at the bump?

Just had lovely weekend away at a hotel with DH and it was like no one had ever seen a PG woman before!

In the restuarant this woman's head turned so she could continue to stare as I walked past her table enroute to the loo. I was wearing an inoffensive loose fitting dress so not like it was on display or in anyones face. Im 29wks.

Also noticed it in the pool area I was practically a spectacle... Young couples, single women, men. The only people not rude enough to stare were the little kids.

Whats it all about? Are pregnant women really that few and far between? Started feeling like I was a bit of a freak when Im only pregnant!

Unless they're muttering "fat heifer" under their breath you really have nothing to get worked up about.

I find myself looking at bumps and thinking happily of when I had one.

Loads of people look/stare at m too. I always assumed that like GY says they are thinking about when they had their children or are just thinking how nice it is. Neer for one second have thought that people do it out of shock or offense.
Just smile and carry on.

I got this too.

Im not sure why people do it? I definately have more of an interest in pregnant women now that Ive done it twice myself. I may be guilty of looking a bit too long at pregnant women but for me its a case of thinking..'ooo look at that woman..i remember that stage...isnt she lucky...wish i could have another'. So im sure people dont mean any harm by looking...but it is annoying I know.

LOL hadnt really thought that they might be thinking that it was nice etc

Suppose I was brought up to think that staring is rude which is why I found it odd and a bit of a personal invasion. But then oddly, I dont like people looking at me generally (definately not centre of attention kind of girl!) so was feeling a bit weird. If they are really interested I'd be happy to talk to them....Might do that next time, Im sure they'd stop then!

Get used to it, wait until you're pushing a brand new baby around, lots of looks then, but you will be so proud. Whenever anyone looked at me and ds I always said hello, think they all knew I was just so overwhelmed with him and so proud of how cute etc.
People look at me all the time now, but do have a toddler and am normally clutching at stomach with big grimace on face as baby doesnt like me walking or sitting or standing or anything really and every movement and kick leaves me nearly doubled over......
Pregnancy is such a miracle, I'm sure people don't mean to make you feel uncomfortable, it's just crazy to look at a pregnant woman and think she has another person inside her.

SoupDragon · 29/12/2008 15:05

Oh, don't worry about it. Soon they'll be staring at you because you have baby sick down your back and two large milk patches on your front.

llareggub · 29/12/2008 15:09

Is this your first?

I thought this with my first pregnancy but to be honest, I think it was probably me being self-concious. Nobody has looked twice at me in this pregnancy.

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 29/12/2008 15:14

Can't say that I ever noticed anyone staring at my bumps. Unsolicted advice from perfect strangers was got my goat.
Woman in shop; Do you know you can't eat raw eggs when you are pregnant? It's bad for the baby.
Me; People eat raw quiche? I had always cooked mine. And I plan on cooking this one.

Cherrybaby · 29/12/2008 15:28

haha, I had the opposite problem up until around 24 weeks; nobody could notice my bump under my coat on the tube, so I never got a seat ! I tried sticking my belly out a couple of times but it never worked

My husband's family are always going on about "the bump"; it bothered me to begin with but it doesn't anymore; it's just people fascinated with a new life growing inside you, like littleboyblue said

FunnyLittleFrog · 29/12/2008 15:33

LOL at raw quiche. I once asked for a diet coke in a pub and the (teenage) barmaid said 'oh, are you sure? i thought diet coke was bad for the baby'! Possibly is in huge quantities but not when it's the first one for months.

The only people I ever noticed really staring at my bump were skinny spiky business type women in their late 20s / early 30s. Maybe I was a bit para but they seemed to be looking at me with absolute fear and dread!

festivedollyx · 29/12/2008 18:12

just wait till srangers start touching it then you will get annoyed !!!!!lol

you may find that it can be someone longing to be pg or some one newly pg thats looking at your bump i used to do it! and still even though im 24 weeks pg i still look at other pg women and wonder how far on they are!!

Tee2072 · 29/12/2008 18:22

Be glad they are only staring and not trying to touch!

lollipopmother · 30/12/2008 13:18

I used to love it when people stared at my bump, but then I was one of those smug pregnant ladies that totally loved being pregnant, I know that some people don't enjoy it anywhere near as much as I did. If I were staring at a pg women now it'd be purely down to bump envy!

xxhunnyxx · 30/12/2008 13:30

I look at bumps and think ''oh wow I can't wait till mine is like that''.
Or before I was pregnant I would look with a little envy.
