Does anyone know the definitive answer to whether one should dye one's hair during pregnancy?

One's roots are disturbing one.

I saw the consultant at 17 weeks a couple of weeks ago and he siad it would be OK. They were pretty bad by this point and I was getting desperate!

Yes I was thinking of waiting til at least 12 weeks.

yes!
grey hair sucks and I would be as grey as a badger unless I dyed mine every 8 weeks.

I have a 3 1/2 year old and dyed my hair throughout pg; now 33 weeks and would rather cut off my left leg than go au naturel hair wise.

hairdressers have suggested going easy on the peroxide, but I'm not sure there is any real scientific reason for this.

Picante · 18/12/2008 18:28

It's just a red DIY one. Is it just the peroxide that's the problem?

Someone told me to wait til after 12 weeks.

When it's done, try not to have dye right next to the scalp if poss. (but for roots that's not poss?!!)

only highlights, according to my hairdresser (where the colour doesn't touch skin)

TinselBaublesMistletoe · 18/12/2008 18:43

It is safe but you can't be sure how your hair will react to it. Somewhere along the line the message got messed up and it became unsafe to dye your hair.

RaspberryBlower · 18/12/2008 18:43

I waited for the first 12 weeks but it was torture, and I can't look at photos of myself last Christmas when I'd put Henna on and it just looked even worse. I could never find any definitive advice about it either, just erred on the side of caution.

I've dyed my hair althrough all three pregnancies. And i haven't discovered i'm pg untill 10/11wks i have dyed my hair in that time.

ElectraInExcelsis · 18/12/2008 18:53

Dying darker is supposed to be 'worse' than highlights. I haven't stopped having mine done at all (have it darker).

nailpolish · 18/12/2008 18:55

tinsel is right

wellbalanced · 18/12/2008 19:05

I had mine done at 6ish wk didnt know was preg) then again 13wk and 24wk my hairdressers always said safe...

Picante · 19/12/2008 06:48

Thanks all. I shall wait until 12 weeks just for peace of mind then maybe just go with a semi-permanent.

It's a complete myth that you can't dye your hair.

The only thing you have to bear in mind is that the colour you usually use may not turn out to be the exact shade when you're pregnant because your hair can react differently to it, just as TBM says.

Go get your roots done!

ElectraInExcelsis · 19/12/2008 22:38

Thanks everyone, I feel quite relieved
