Sweep at 39 weeks?

She wouldn't examine me last week when I asked.

Do you think they would tomorrow? I know baby is fully engaged.

Am having a frigging awful time

I had a crappy last few weeks with DS2 and they wouldn't sweep me, even though they said they would, as it was they sweeped me then 2 hours later induced me anyway.

I am 37+3 now, and have just had I think the most stressful couple of months of my entire life with this pregnancy, they've agreed to induce me on Boxing Day, so if you want a moaning partner, I'm your man, or woman I suppose!

I was having pains last week so thought they would, but turns out it was a UTI, it must have been as since Ive been on the antibiotics the BHs have stopped.

It seems an age away!!

DS2 was born on his due date too, and seeing as though this little one is due christmas day I really don't want to wait, I want to get things going now so shes here before!!

Im hopin g to have baby at home so cant really ask to be induced

this link is to various studies where membranes were swept from 38 weeks. They show good outcomes (avoidance of induction)and prove some hospitals do this as routine. Might be worth reading to arm yourself with good arguments.

My friend had one at 39 wks. She'd really had enough and she told the mw at clinic that she thought she was leaking amniotic fluid. They gave her a sweep and 4 hours later labour started and she was delighted.

Why wouldn't they sweep? What are the arguments against it?

My consultant is a very highly regarded private consultant (I had him on the NHS) and he gave me two sweeps - first one at 37 weeks

Spicemonster in my case with DS2, she kept offering to do the sweep 'next time', the next time would come and she'd offer to do it 'next time' again. I also had one MW tell me they wouldn't do it because I was in the surgery, then I'd had a HB booked so the next visit was at home and another MW wouldn't do it because I was at home

It does seem to depend on the HA you're in. Mine won't sweep until past your due date. It sounds like it might be the same for you.

Apart from the UTI? Yes!

SPD, cough, cold, I have an ear infection i both ears, I cant hear a thing (everyone sounds like they are underwater!!

I really can't sleep at all, but I can't walk round the house because of my pelvis so I just sit on the edge of the bed in the dark for hours at night!!

Sex brought labour on last time but thats not possible this time round And I don't want DH to try a sweep, he hasn't a clue!

My mw (and many mumsnetters) told me that when you have coughs/colds/infections your body will resist labour to protect you and the baby. Therefore a sweep is not likely to work when you are so ill.

I had a sweep at 39 weeks and 3 hours later came down with flu. For those first 3 hours I thought the sweep had got things going but as soon as the flu hit my body shut down (which I was grateful for).

Its probably not what you wanted to hear. But on the otherhand could you really manage labour while feeling so crappy?

Offering somebody a sweep on xmas eve?!!? I'd worry about that. Fewer anaesthetists, doctors, midwives, nurses, skeleton staff on xmas day. Fabulous plan altogether!

Hi i have a sweep booked for 39 +4 days because of a previous section consultant wants to try a sweep and avoid induction if i go over.

I know Liffey - Thats what I thought! As it happens she has been admitted tonight for high blood pressure, she had a bleed last week so I hope the induce her soon x

Hello guys, the power of a midwife is so annoying haha! Im 40 weeks and 2 days and ive had enough. Im not sleeping, im worried that my baby has stopped growing (measured small last app - 2 weeks ago - and i dont feel that she has grown) and at my last appointment by blood pressure was unusually high (but nothing showing in urine).

I have a midwife appointment tomorrow morning and im gonna ask for a sweep - I really hope they do one - will they do one in a docs surgery in UK? I really want to get things moving otherwise I can see my xmas being crap, coz im either still pregnant or in the hospital!

Trying to keep happy but im getting a little titchy now - im sick of people ringing and asking me if she's here yet ;(

not sure they will go against the midwives 40 week rule though??

Yup - what is it with midwifes and Christmas Eve - i've been offered one on Christmas Even too... when I'll be 41+1. Admittedly she did try to do one the day before yesterday - but couldn't reach the cervix.... very frustrating - I can sympathise entirely, just want to get on with it now... .good luck!!!
