Any recommendations for a holiday in the sun at about 22-24 weeks?

My husband and I have just cancelled our 3 week holiday to Thailand as I would have been too far gone to enjoy a tropical long haul trip.

Now we need to get away for potentially the last time in a while in mid Jan/early Feb. I'm longing for some sunshine. The Canaries doesn't really appeal and everywhere else seems too cold!! I'm also a bit concerned about the whole food poisoning thing and although I have a cast iron stomach, I'm worried about what I might be able to pass onto the baby without knowing - would a high-end Sharm hotel be ok?

I'm asking a lot I know but can anyone suggest anything????

Thanks!

we have similar, went through every option. I am 25 weeks preg and have a 2 year old DS. We decided to get away for 'last break before second child!'

I was totally put off Egypt by tales of food poisoning on tripadvisor, doesn't matter how posh the hotel, they just have regular outbreaks.

In the end we decided to go to Israel (Eilat) in January. THe same weather as Egypt, e.g. 25 degrees and sun, and the food hygiene is much better, that's what swung it for me. It's just not worth the risk when pg, and cast iron stomachs are not cast iron in pregnancy, your immune system is not as strong.
same fairly short flight time etc. We're flying via Tel Aviv in order to fly straight into Eilat, otherwise you have to go via Taba anyway.

so there's one suggestion!

We also looked at Canaries but didn't appeal at all. You could possibly consider the coast of Turkey but won't be very very warm.. good luck!

oh just had another thought; Caribbean. e.g. Barbados. Would have gone for that if didn't have toddler. Flight times as little as 8 hours which is ok when preg as long as you stretch etc..

Would definitely go for the Caribbean. I went when pregnant with DD1 at 24 weeks and it was great. If you can - go to a hotel that also has a spa and then you can also have some lovely treatments. Food was all fantastic.....

I was going to suggest Eilat and then noticed another poster already did. We had a great holiday there last year. The food and hotels are great and the water temperature is perfect.

I would have said thailand wasn't too far - i went to the maldives between weeks 24 and 27 and had a wonderful time.
At that time of year you are going to have to fly for at least 8 hours to get above 24/25 degrees (in Egypt)so the Caribbean is your best option I would say. I've been to barbados, Cuba, Mexico, Dom Rep, Jamaica and had great times in all of them.

I have holidayed in Thailand 6 times and loved it. The problem with Thailand is a few things though: 1) Possible food poisoning; 2) Very very hot (possibly too hot) 3) Very crowded, which could be stressful when pregnant 4) Possibly not such good medical attention as elsewhere (Eilat, for example).

We went to Cyprus when i was 32 weeks pg and it was lovely. Not too hot but still really warm. Food fine.

Aruba (in the Caribbean) is fab. Majority of tourists are American so very high expectations about food quality, accommodation and hygene. 8 hr flight. It was a Dutch colony until a few years ago so the infrastructure and hospitals etc are IMO of a higher standard than some of the other caribbean islands. Gorgeous beaches and warm all year around.

diginglebells · 16/12/2008 10:44

dont forget you cant take any anti-malarial drugs whilst pg. we went to Mauritius when i was 7 weeks pg last Jan, was lovely (would have been even better without ms)

dinkystinkyclaus · 16/12/2008 11:12

South Africa maybe?

MsG · 16/12/2008 11:33

Any reason the Canaries doesn't appeal? I went to Lanzarote in December once and it was lovely, and only a shortish flight - I'd recommend it, but actually I wouldn't go for more than 2 weeks as it's a pretty small island and I think you'd run out of things to do!

I vote for the Caribbean too and am off to Grenada next year! I also discounted many destinations due to food poisoning and/or other lurgies seeming quite common. I figured that anywhere that's popular with Americans will have good standards of hygiene as they just won't put up with grot.

Thanks so much for all your suggestions!
I actually had an appointment with a Consultant today (as I've got a fibroid which needs checking over) and he didn't advise me to do anything longer than 5 hours otherwise the Caribbean would have been perfect!

Never thought of Eilat - sounds very promising so am on my way to investigate that!

Thanks again for all your advice - really appreciated!

We thought about Egypt when i was 16ish wk pregnant but were put off by lots of friends who have been and had small bowts of food poisoning even in 5* hotels... We decided not to go abroad and will go with small baby instead.
