Hi havent written here for a while but would really appreciate any advice on what might seem a silly dilema. I am 15 weeks pregnant and usually have my hair highlighted (with bleach) but havent had it done since before Xmas and am holding off as am not sure if its safe or not. ( ie can any of the dye be absorbed by me and harm baby?) Appreciate it may seem a daft question but would be really glad of any advice, if anyone knows anything. ( My roots are looking bad but if its a no -go then I will be brave.)Thanks.

Hi - am pretty certain that when I was expecting DS a hairdresser told me that colouring is no problem even with bleach - think it is that perms may not take so well while pregnant. Hope you get more posts confirming this is the case - I say go & get them done - instantly improves your mood!

I was told by a midwife not to do it during my dd's pregnancy. Not sure she's was the oracle on such areas though!

Hi rainbowface - I have been coloring my hair for years and was told with all 3 of my children to avoid it (especially first tri). All info I have read in past says the same thing. I need my hair colored too but am treying to bare with it till my pregnancy is over. LOTS OF GRAY!

I was in this same dilema and resisted from having my highlights done for the first 4months of pregnancy. From the research I did most of the advice said that it would be advisable not to have it done in the first trimester due to breathing in the chemicals. Apparently highlights are ok as the dye is not actually touching your scalp and can't be absorbed unlike other hair dyes. I eventually had mine done and felt like a new woman!

There was a thread on this a few weeks ago ( just after I'd had my hair done). I think the general concensus was that it was fine. We all worry about so many things when pg now but I'm pretty sure the dye can't get through to the baby. Some people suggested avoiding it during the first trimester but on the whole most people said they would get it done.

Go for it - it will make you feel more human. The only drawback is that your hair tends to grow more quickly when pg so you have to do it more often

They talked about this on This Morning when the most recent cancer scare about hair dye came out in the news. The key to all of these safety issues is whether the dye has contact with the scalp itself. Highlights seem to be the answer: foil or cap will protect the scalp.

Ok thanks for the advice. I will probably leave it a couple of weeks (just to be safe)and then make that appointment. I know I will feel so much better for having it done and more human again!
