I am 20weeks pg with no. 3 and up until the last 2 weeks I was doing really well. Not eating too much, having a biscuit but not the whole pack. So why di I now need to eat so much, and rubbish too. I'm not bingeing, I am just eating too much and the wrong stuff. Anyone got a good way to eat sensibly when pg? Can some one tell me it's bad for the baby? that might stop me!

Eaten an entire bag of funsize Twirls (279g) since yesterday evening. But my sickness has suddenly got worse again at 19 weeks and this is the only thing that combats it.

This is third pg. I've always gained on the very top end of normal weight gain range and lost it again without difficulty. I eat insane amounts btw - the chocolate is not that unusual. But at the moment can't really eat proper food. Tis crap.

But yes, you do need to eat lots and don't worry about it.

Cosmogirl · 10/12/2008 18:39

Mrsgboring - I am the same with the chocolate - I have such a sweet tooth in this pregnancy. I am 24 weeks now and have had the same worries that I am not eating the right things etc... but as someone has said, you have to listen to what your body is telling you.

I was very sick for the first 5 months and lost over a stone, so actually weigh the same now as I did before I got pregnant, so zero weight gain so far. It isn't easy and I had no idea how much pregnancy would affect my appetite - I miss being able to eat normally.

ilovemyghds · 10/12/2008 18:43

I ate loads with each pregnancy (have 3 DCs) and it was almost as if I couldn't help it! Was v hungry a lot of the time, especially when I had morning sickness. I am quite slim usually, but gained 4 stone every time . Lost it each time afterwards though, and DCs all average birth weights. I did make sure I ate more than 5 a day of fruit and veg though, and also aware of having enough iron etc. Drank lots of water too and cut right down on caffeine. If I knew that I had eaten enough healthy foods that day though I never felt guilty about the biscuits I ate as well!

I was pigging out sooo badly around 17-20 weeks - I have a bad sweet tooth at the best of times and just started filling up on sweets, biscuits, cakes etc - all the bad stuff.

A good friend then reminded me that it is 6 yrs since she had her second child and she has only just got back to her pre-preg weight, as she did the same when she was pregnant. That was scary enough for me!

I then decided on drastic action and have now cut out all sugar till xmas. Two weeks on and I am looking and feeling better already and also getting used to snacking on fruit, nuts & raisins etc. I know a little of what you fancy does you good, but I really needed a kick start to get me on the healthy eating road - and this seems to have worked!

Why not just enjoy it while you have the chance to indulge a little!!! I'm 39 wks and have had a really sweet tooth throughout pregnancy, especially in middle and later stages. I think you get so tired apart from everything else, especially running round after a toddler, that your body craves energy. I'm not going mad like you, but definitely need my daily dose of cakes/biscuits!

As long as you are eating the healthy stuff alongside the less healthy stuff, your baby won't suffer - it'll take whatever it needs from you!

Other tips.... perhaps eat little and often - or if that doesn't work try a big carbohydrate rich meal like a bowl of porridge or baked potato which might help keep you filled up for a bit. Alternatively, I sometimes find if I have small sweet things to pick at like yogurt brazils or haribo sweets that one or two will satisfy me for quite a while!

Good luck - but overall I'd say don't worry about it!!!

at this stage your baby has been 'made' and now its developing and needing lots of nutrients from you. this preg. (3rd) i didn't put on any weight until about 18wks and now at 27 have put on 10kilos...yep a kilo a week...its grim but i take it as a good sign that all is well (i'm not saying inversly that all is bad if you don't!)

saw midwife yesterday and she wasn't concerned.

but it can feel pretty horribly when you are ravinous and cant stop eating. although i did enjoy immensly my thick piece of toast with mashed banana and a big glass of milk at 10pm last night!

KT1983 · 11/12/2008 10:39

mmm....toast & mashed banana - Must try that one! [ fgrin]

My appetite has been pretty normal since getting pregnant - Definatly eat more, but tend to stick to the healtier stuff. My craving is raw carrots - I get through tons!

Ive put on 6lbs so far at 31weeks - but Christmas is coming & I feel that my healthy eating & waistline is going to slide from now until the Due Date!

wideratthehips · 11/12/2008 11:08

ahhh the carrot craving...i had this with ds2..a bag of organic carrots a day...i got orange hands from peeling! so that was ab out 6 carrots a day for a while. i think it was the texture and biting that was delicous.

ds1 was tart green apples and aniseed balls.

this baby is comfort food (last night for supper was garlic chicken and a MOUND of calcanon)

IceCube · 11/12/2008 13:43

I've been the same, fairly sensible up to the last couple of weeks (I'm now 40 weeks).

I think for me there has been a bit of boredom/comfort eating as I have had bad pelvic pain and can't be my usual active self. I know I normally eat more when I am less active so I've put it down to that and am enjoying eating nice things as I reckon once the baby comes I'll be too busy to enjoy it even if I can still be bothered to buy it!

longlegted · 11/12/2008 23:03

It's really interesting that we are all so different in what we crave and how much weight we put on. I think I want to have my cake and eat it, quite literally. I've had to stay ina lot over the last few weeks as both ds and dd have been ill, so that doesn't help. I know it doesn't matter on the large scale of things, as i'm lucky to be pg, I would just love to stay thinish!
