I fell down the stairs at home (about halfway) kind of twisted as i came down, hurting my side and landing on my tummy on the bottom step. I'm 18 weeks btw. Called my antenatal unit who said go to a&e. Went to a different hospital to the one i'm booked at as it's nearer. They didn't scan or listen with a doppler. Obgyn said it'd be too soon to hear the heartbeat (!) so they took blood, felt my tummy, had us waiting around for 5 hours then told us to go home. Baby hasn't moved since fall. They booked me a scan for thurs afternoon. So just worried sick until then. Baby has moved several times a day in the last couple of weeks but nothing now.

18 weeks is not too early to hear the heartbeat. MW listened at 16 weeks with me.

Can you get to the A&E at the hospital you are booked into?

BabyBaby123 · 10/12/2008 10:29

go back to the antenatal day unit and tell them you haven't felt the baby move - midwife had trouble picking up my baby's heartbeat at 16 weeks after a fall and they scanned me there and then. I'm sure it's fine - your baby is well protected but it would put your mind at rest

A mw at another hospital found the hb at 12 weeks when i had a bleed. I think she just didn't want to listen in case she couldn't find it and they stil wouldn't be able to scan me. The whole thing was ridiculous. They just said well at 18 weeks we couldn't do anything anyway! Think i'll call my booking hospital and see what they say.

I'd call MW or GP surgery and see if they will find the heartbeat for you today. It is probably true that they won't necessarily find it but round here it is customary for MW to first listen for HB at 16 weeks. If they can't find it you probably won't be more worried than you are already. If they can then it will put your mind at rest.

BabyBaby123 · 10/12/2008 10:56

if they can't find it they will probably send you for a scan today anyway - they can't just leave you not knowing

Hi Sorry to hear about your fall. I had a bleed at 17 weeks and mw came staraight out. The 1st thing she did was find the heart beat. I would go to the hospital where you are booked into and if need be cry pityfully until someone examines you properly. Remember though at 18 weeks baby movements don't feel that strong. I was around 18 weeks before i could really tell a baby movement from my own guts gurgling and i've already had 1 child.

With my 1st i actually crashed my car due to low bp at around 20 weeks. We were both absolutly fine so please don't worry. But demand to be checked properly so that you can then enjoy your pregnancy.

best of luck

Poor you!

I agree to call someone or go back to the hospital.

Babies are pretty padded in your womb, and they never move when you want them too. Maybe try eating someting then lying down and really relaxing for 20 mins - that used to get mine going...

I hope it's all ok.

I fell down a flight of stairs at about 20 weeks pregnant at a tube station - think concrete and steel steps! I went straight to ante-natal ward and they found the hb straight away to put my mind at rest and gave me painkillers.

I had damaged my coccyx - a hairline fracture and had bruising all over one side of my little bump. DD didn't move much in following days either but 18 weeks (and 20 in my case) is still early for movement.

Try a fizzy coke, ice cream or something, used to work for me. My DD was absolutely fine after my fall, she is now a bonny 9 month old currently climbing up my legs!

mamakim · 10/12/2008 11:51

That's the other thing that annoyed me the doc didn't really believe i usually felt lots of movement. It's my second and i'm pretty skinny, my dh has felt pretty big kicks already. Grr stupid woman. Need to sort out some childcare for ds if hospital can see me. Dh thinks may as well wait until tomorrow. I know they can't do anything if baby isn't okay but surely i deserve to know if it is or isn't. Dh reckons baby has probably curled up in retreat wondering what has happened! Going to drink some coke now.

It's probably not that she didn't believe you felt movement, I had some decent kicks fairly early but then they stopped for a few days and apparently movement early on is dependent on your baby being in a good position. It's highly likely the fall just shifted the baby to a part of your uterus that you can't feel - that's what I was told anyway!

Good luck!

brettgirl2 · 10/12/2008 11:55

Have you asked your midwife if she will see you? That't got to be easier than going to the hospital, surely?

mamakim · 10/12/2008 11:56

I haven't seen a community mw with this pregnancy at all. Just had my booking in at the hospital and that's been it.

My mw found hb at 10wks - although she had said that it was unlikely at that early.

for you that they didn't give you better care and assistance.

I would go and see someone again to see if you can get a proper answer.

mamakim · 10/12/2008 12:27
