SUA diagnosed at 20 week scan - has anyone else got experience of this?

We had our 20 week scan last night and whilst everything else has been tested, checked and measured just fine I have been advised that there is a problem with the umbilical cord called Single Umbilical Artery.

We had to go back this morning as the consultant couldn't see kidneys properly due to position of baby. She's measured them and everything is still normal. Despite her reassurance that all is well I am terrified.

Does anyone else have experience of this problem?

What (if any) issues did you have at birth?

Hi Peaches . I'm no expert, but a friend of my sisters had this on her 20 week scan too. From what I gather it's not that uncommon - about 1-2% of all babies, and as long as there are no other problems detected at the scan (esp relating to kidneys - can be linked to urinary flow problems)there's usually no cause for concern. The baby is question had a few extra growth scans later on to make sure that things are progressing nicely, and was born healthy and well at term. Just one story, but as my sister is a midwife and I am a medical sociologist we do tend to analyse things to death, and in the majority of cases as long as everything else looks fine your baby will be fine

I had this with my ds, just meant i had a few more blood tests and a couple more scans (more pics for us ) In the end, he was perfectly healthy - nothing came of it.

Thanks for your messages

  • I am a born worrier and definitely tend to over-analyse when given the chance...

My dh is much more chilled out but it's our first baby and i'm wracked with every kind of nerves you can imagine.

Do they ever go though?! I hope so!
