My consultants secretary just assured me that lemsip was safe in pregnancy ... but I just went on the lempsip website and it said that lemsip is not recommended during pregnancy ....
any thoughts?
am feeling awful with horrible cold

I don't thin it is because it contains an antihistimine - but I might be wrong!

nickytwotimes · 02/12/2008 14:46

No lemsip.
It's the decongestant afaik.
You could check withthe dos, but (no offence) not the secretary!

doggiesayswoof · 02/12/2008 14:47

Take some paracetamol.

Wallaroo · 02/12/2008 14:49

DH only lets me take paracetamol in pregnancy - he's GP and I tend to follow his advice. (Nicky I meant decongestant - it just came out as antihistamine for some reason - I am pregnant!!!!!)

nickytwotimes · 02/12/2008 14:52

I knew you meant that Wallaroo.

checked with midwife at St Marys Paddington, and was told that lemsip is fine.

My midwife at the antenatal session, recommended against lemsip or any other form of decongestant as it can stop you producing breast milk...

minko · 05/12/2008 11:29

I remember not being allowed Lemsip - tis a nightmare with all the colds at this time of year. Paracetamol helps... a bit.

Madigan · 05/12/2008 18:34

well lemsip did not help, so went to doctor and now on antibiotics - great .... but have felt like death warmed up for 2 weeks so hopefully the end is now in sight ........

You can't take anything that contains a decongestant in pg, that's why lemsip isn't suitable.
You can take paracetamol though and can you make hot lemon drinks yourself or hot ribena or something to help throat?

brettgirl2 · 05/12/2008 18:39

Take paracetamol and concoct your own honey and lemon by squeezing fresh lemon and adding honey. Lemon is a natural decongestant and it honestly works - only problem is that it tastes a bit vile!

Madigan · 05/12/2008 18:40

ok - am going to get going with the honey and lemon as well. thank you.

lemon / ginger tea with honey helps along with paracetomol and drinking lots of fluid

mrsfossil · 06/12/2008 16:31

Hi i recently asked mw the same question. She told me that to stick to paracetamol and one water with lemon and honey. Remember that is the parcetalmol which will best help you aches and pains witha cold and its the safest pain killer to take when preggers. I wouldn't risk the lemsip.
