Help!! Am new to all this and only just 7 weeks pregnant. Got a call asking me to come along to a midwife app on saturday. Happy to go but wondering what I can expect? Will there be a scan etc? I have no idea what to do to prepare myself. Any advice or can you tell me how the your first mid wife apps went?

Congratulations!

At seven weeks it's unlikely she will do a scan, that's usually at 12 weeks.

She will probably:
take your medical history (asking lots of questions - do you smoke, any history of diabetes etc)
take your blood pressure
check your urine - make sure you need the toilet
give you advice about what you can and cannot eat during pregnancy
take blood to test for various illnesses.

She will also ask you about where you would like to give birth, and book you into the system.

congratulations!
Round here our first appointment tends to be at 12 weeks unless there are problems - 7 weeks is early.

If my appts are to go by, you will have a general chat and fill in a few basic forms. She/he might feel your tum, possibly weigh you but doubt there will be a scan.

The types of questions asked will be about any previous pregnancies, any medical history that is relevant - like diabetes, any operations, any big allergies etc etc
She/he will probably take your blood pressure and might even take your temp (one did, one never did - I have 2 kids)

hth any other info I can help with, just ask!

oooh yes! Forgot all about the dreaded wee pot!
Round here they would give you a little sample pot to take away and to bring with "fresh" wee at each appt. They use this to check for sugar in your wee along with other things. I was always worried about carrying the damn thing in my handbag and it opening and making a mess

They tend to check the heartbeat at 12kwks plus. This is the gel on the tum and torch looking thing gently pressed down on your tum to find a heart beat. Very exciting stuff but they normally wait until 12 wks as it is hard to find before this date (too low down) and they don?t like to frighten you if they can?t find it!

no, your partner doesn't need to go, unless you particularly want him to be there, or if he wants to be there.
