What to look for in scan for a boy?!

what exactly do they look for in a scan for a boy? It seems that lots of people are saying they look for a little appendage but I would havethought that the testicles would have been more obvious. At my 20 wk scan i was told they couldn't see a willy but thought could see testicles. i would have thought this was what to look for anyway and mustbe easier to see than an appendage which could possibly be the cord! Any ideas anyone?

I'm not sure - I just had my scan and they thought a boy, although the baby had its heel covering the crucial area. I'm a bit tempted to pay for a private scan because I have two girls and no boy stuff at all...

I have had a scan and you're right, well, at least on mine it was the testicles, I have got a picture of it.
They went kind of under the bum, it looks like he's sat on a photocopier iykwim...

I wish I had a scanner so I could show you my scan photo.
His little appendage was sticking up loud and proud. There was no mistaking it for anything other than a todger.
The scan man was pissing himself laughing as he asked us if we minded knowing what sex it was. We said no.
He said ''put it this way, if you hadn't wanted to know, I'd not have been able to show you this picture''

Thought must be a boy. Couldn't see what else they could be. Am rather baffled how some people get told boy then have a girl. Boys bits seem so obvious. Well looks like here comes DS4.

Private scan seems to be more accurate. friend was told boy at hospital scan but had 3d scan and were obviously no boys bits to be seen. Obvious on picture that was girl too but as would cost extra £90 tobe told for sure didn't ask for official confirmation. Did turn out to be girl in the end!

Apparently a girl has a 'Burger Bun' and a boy has a 'Turtle'. That's what it looks like on the scans.

My boy turned to the side and his willy and testicles were VERY obvious at 20 weeks.

Mine was playing with his on a late scan I had. Elderly scanner v as dh and I sniggered.

vannah · 02/12/2008 20:41

dh saw a three white dots in a triangle and i thought i saw the actual thing though i could have seen the cord mistakenly

auntyspan · 02/12/2008 20:47

LOL the sonographer with DD1 said very loudly,"yes it's clearly a girl.... you can see her labia here and here.... no penis there at all just labia..." DH was mortified as my mum was sitting next to him sniggering away!

JacksFirstChristmasMama · 02/12/2008 20:50

On a scan they can somtimes mistake the labia for testicles... embryologically, it all develops from the same structure, only differentiates due to sex hormones, and so can sometimes be mistaken because both tend to be disproportionally large in utero... unless willy stands up as mentioned above

On the Funniest Bit of Childbirth thread there was a woman who had a pretty hard labour and when he DD was finally born, and they carried the baby past her, the baby's labia were so swollen (from labour and mum's hormones) that in her confused exhausted immediately-post-partum state she thought it was a boy even though the doctor had said it was a girl... and then thought to herself "well he's the doctor, he should know".

So confusion can reign after birth too!

CoteDAzur · 02/12/2008 20:56

I was told DD was a girl at 12 week scan.

Recently, I was told bump is a boy, again at 12 week scan.

Apparently genitals look virtually identical at this stage but the "angle of dangle" is what differentiates girl and boy fetuses.

that your ultrasound people can't tell the sex at 20 week scan.

terrystyg · 02/12/2008 21:47

Same as Vannah, I have 2 boys and saw 3 white dots in a triangle both times.

shelsco · 04/12/2008 12:21

Don't know if my ultrasound people just covering own backs just incase wrong. she did keep saying she'd been wrong before!

I had my 20 week scan yesterday the sonographer said he couldnt get a clear view but if wanted him to guess he would guess girl???? not very helpful as i wanted to buy in things early now not sure what to do! im wondering if he was covering his back but really knew it was a girl.
