implantation bleeding - when does it start?

I've got a BFP

The problem is I'm trying to figure out how pregnant I am. I had what I thought was a period starting 28th Sept. It was very light though, and the thing is I know i haven't had sex since then. So was really surprised to get BFP this month.

So could it be an implantation bleed? It did last 4-5 days but was lighter than a usual period.

If it is likely, how long after conception would the implantation bleeding normally occur?

Yes it could be an implantation bleed. Alternatively some women do go on to get period type bleeds when pregnant (when their period would otherwise be due). Both types of bleeding tend to happen around 10-14 days after ovulation so my guess is that you probably got pregnant 10-14 days before your bleed started (so around 14 Sept). That would make you quite far along...

Hi soozze as MrsHappy says it is quite common to still have light periods while pregnant ( a close friend had two before she realised) So to get an idea you need to go back to the 1st day of your last 'normal' period and count from then. Assumming you had a 28 day cycle you could be anything from 12 weeks plus, so please go see a doctor asap

and congratulations

thanks

My last normal period was 10 August. The bleed starting 28th September I took to be a very late period. I did take a pregnancy test on 18th September and it came out negative.

I have been to the doctor but don't think i was strong enough about the 28th being odd as a period time and the no sex afterwards.

She did have a feel of my tummy and concluded I couldn't be as far along as 10 Aug indicated. I had a scan date confirmed today for 5th December - do you think this is too late?

I thought maybe if I could work backwards from it being implantation I could get an idea of how far along I am. But 10 days back would take me to the date I tested negative. So if i got pregnant that day it would make me around 11 weeks. If i use the 10 august as last period date then it comes out at 15 weeks !! Is one of these more likely with the neg test result in the middle?

Sorry so long, i'm driving myself crazy trying to figure out dates! In two weeks I think I'll go nuts.

Hi soozze don't worry about asking questions it would be driving me nuts too!! Are your periods normally regular? and how long is your cycle?

Implantation bleeds and 'false' periods tend to happen around the same time as a normal period would have been due, i.e 14 days after ovulation, therefore I would guess ovulation occured around the 14th of september, meaning that you would have tested negative on the 18th as you were only 4 days past ovulation and would have not been producing hormone by then. Would you say this ties in with around the last time you had sex?

It could be possible that you ovulated very late in that cycle, but ofcourse only you know if you did the deed so to speak around this time

Oh and don't worry about it matching up with when your last period was, this is just a guide.

With this pregnancy I knew exactly when I conceived because we only had sex once the whole cycle (poor dp ) yet the doctors insisted on dating me from my LMP and I knew this was rubbish, it made me nearly 9 weeks when i was 6 (confirmed in a scan) and my due date was put back accordingly. Not very helpful for you I know, but it's important to stress that when your last period was is outdated rubbish so I wouldn't worry about it if it doesn't tally up

soozze · 25/11/2008 00:01

Thanks SatHereSitting. That does help alot.

My periods are normally regular, well within a day or two so 29-31 cycles. I was really ill in Aug so thought that was why everything was off.

I don't know exactly when we had concieved, but I do know we didn't have sex in august and first week sept. So would have to be sometime between 8-28 september so that does fit. I didn't realise it took a while for the hormone to start.

And makes me feel better that it can't be 15 weeks already. It still looks likely to be around 12 weeks though which is quite far along!

Ah yes, congratulations from me too

As Satheresitting has said LMP is often a bit useless when dating pregnancies. I have had only one 28 day cycle in my life and have been known to ovulate as late as day 28 so dates based on LMP can be very out for me. Being ill can absolutely throw everything off so it is entirely possible that you ovulated much later than normal.

11-12 weeks is quite far but at least that means that when you have your scan it will be around the normal time for a dating scan (they happen at 11-14 weeks around here).

Hope the scan goes well.

Thanks MrsHappy I think I must've ovulated really late too, even though the doc thought that unlikely. I just need to find something to occupy myself with for the next week and a half until I find out!
