routine steroid injections for twin pregnancy

Hi
I am just looking for a bit of reassurance really - I am 31 weeks pregnant with twins and supposed to be having steroid injections next week to help their lungs mature just in case they come early. Is this normal/standard? I have no other indications of pre-term labour and my first pregnancy was entirely normal.
Thanks!

Not had twins but I am one . AFAIK it's pretty standard for multiple births to be early, esp if babies approaching normal size each (eek!).

I have MCDA twins and they can come sooner than non id ones on an average. I am nearly 33 weeks now. My consultant says he may give steroids at 35 weeks if there is any sign of TTTS or anything out of whack like blood pressure so he can do section at 36 weeks. I think it is given on a case by case basis and also depends on the consultant. My babies were 4lb each at 32 weeks so I guess he is not so worried. I also have a friend who delivered non id boys at 37+1 and had steroids at 35weeks.

Can you go back and ask them why they want to give steroids at 32 weeks? I can see the logic that multiples do tend to come earlier and so steroids can be a good idea, but presumably there are also risks to giving them. They should be able to talk you through the pros and cons and explain why, for you and your babies, they are recommending giving steroids at this time. Then you'd be in a position to make an informed choice on whether or not to have them.

Thanks all - I have asked 3 times now - the consultant, the midwife, and at the hospital - all say that there is no risk to the babies and it is 'just in case' they come early. I just haven't run across anyone else who has had them so am a bit nervous. It seems my consultant offers it as standard but not all of them in this area do... All very puzzling!

it is a bit early imo - I got to 34 weeks with my DTs before steroids were mentioned and then it was subject to a scan a week later, which I didn't get to as I went into labour the day before!
