Hi there, I'm 5 weeks pregnancy with my first baby and want to buy a decent pregnancy/childbirth book. Can anyone recommend a really good one? Thanks in advance. x

Congratulations!
Trying to remember which one I liked; have you browsed the library to check them out?
Maybe the NCT Your Birth Year one?

Got to be the Mumsnet one.
Indispensable. Found it in a second hand bookshop and was how I discovered Mumsnet.

Also liked the Vicki Iovine one. I didn't find one book, apart from the MN one, that was useful right the way through my pregnancies, so might be worth getting a few out of the library.

And congratulations!

Rough Guide to Pregnancy by Kaz Cooke It's not so "frilly" as other books.

I also think "How Not to be the Perfect Mother" by Libby Purves, though dated now, is really worth a read. For me, it more adequately described the reality of getting out and about with a baby than anything else I read.

I've got one by Janet Balaskas which is great. Very 70's style though but I think she has done more up to date stuff too. Worth a look anyhoo.

I've got 'pregnancy for dummies' which is really good, its factual and doesn't make me feel like an idiot.
A while ago I read 'from here to maternity' by Mel Geidroyc which is pretty much an autobiographical account of her pregnancy so isnt a reference guide, but I found it helpful and funny.

I got some on e-bay. 'what to expect when expecting', 'the baby whisperer', 'pregnancy & birth'. Nct groups lend books which is good when on a budget..I liked the nct 'brestfeeding' guide.

That's brilliant, thanks so much for all your suggestions. Just had a look on Amazon and also saw some good suggestions for books for fathers-to-be - perfect Christmas present for DH! LOL.

vicky levine's is good fun.

My favorite for pregnancy and the first few months is Dr Gordon's "birth and beyond"

congratulations!

Vicky Iovine

Your Pregnancy Week by Week, or I'm Pregnant, both by Lesley Regan. She's wonderful.
I didn't like the Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy by Vicki Iovine that much, there were lots of things she said that didnt happen to me or anyone I know... but everyone's different.
Congratulations!!!!
