Excess saliva!!

Hi, this is squirrel jr using squirrel3's computer. I am 6mths pregers and have a really bad spit problem.I get so much saliva in my mouth it is unbelievable,I have to constantly spit it out, its discusting! Is there anybody out there who has had this problem?

mmmm sort of Squirrel. I'm 8 and bit months pregnant and for most of it have suffered a really irritating cough which seems to be caused by reflux, but I do also seem to need to spit more too (so ladylike!!!). The only thing that helps me is taking Gaviscon but I guess that is more for the reflux than saliva. Sorry, haven't been much help have I?!!!

I get that a lot when I'm feeling nauseous. Very common. Ptyalism is the extreme form. Got this from hyperemesis.org.uk:

Excessive saliva, known medically as ptyalism ('tie-er-lizum') is a relatively rare condition but is sometimes associated with HG. It isn't common even in HG, but seems to occur with HG more often than on its own. Anyone who suffers from it will know about it - when we say excessive, we mean that there's so much the poor woman can't swallow it and has to keep spitting into a bowl or hankie and might need to put a towel on her pillow when resting. This can be very distressing - she may be very embarrassed about it and want to avoid all contact with other people.

There are several diet-based remedies that sometimes work, but homeopathy seems to provide more reliable relief. If you can manage it, try sucking on a lemon or lime wedge, or drink water with fresh lemon or lime squeezed into it. If you would like to try homeopathy, ideally you should contact a registered homeopath. If you can't find one or can't afford it, you may be able to buy a homeopathic remedy called tabacum from your local health food store or chemist.

To the best of our knowledge, there are no conventional drugs used to treat ptyalism in pregnancy.

I'm glad theres someone out there with a similar problem.Its so embarassing as I have to spit it or it makes me sick. Im creating 2 litres of this stuff a day euuurrrggghhh.I had really bad morning sickness until I started to spit it out, so bad I was nearly hospitalised because I was so dehydrated. I just hope it stops when the baby is born!

Franch, thank you so much for the advice, it made me laugh so much because it is so true, I don't like visiting anybody at the moment because it is so embarassing and people don't understand the fact that you feel like your drowning in saliva!!!

I will try sucking the lemon cure today!!!

Im 8 weeks. Im also spiting,but iv been vomiting everything i eat or drink. i have no cure 4 my problem as of yet, but i've bin told to suck Lemons and eat crackers.

sam, ahh, Feel so sorry for u cos I know how you feel. I sicked everything I ate or drank and hardly got out of bed for the first few mths and was so upset as I thought it would never end. It only stopped when I started spitting, it might be yuk but spitting is better than sicking.

So go spit girl, spit!!!

Ps, I may be being thick, but what is HG?

sq3 - HG = hyperemesis gravidarum - extreme pregnancy sickness - usually leads to dehydration & hospitalisation. See the hyperemesis site I referred to below. Good luck

I think being pregnant affects the brain!!!!
