19 + 4 and feeling a little worried

Ok, paranoid first timer here.

I had a miscarriage in October last year, so obviously I'm worried about how things go this time.

At 19 + 4, should I be feeling movement yet? I am rather well padded, so would that have an effect? I had thought I had felt some fluttering in there, but not sure if this was junior, and it also doesn't seem to happen much, certainly not every day.

I need someone to slap me and tell me it's all normal! My 20 week scan isn't for another two weeks yet, and I scared myself yesterday when I read a post on another thread I'm on where a lady was told her baby had no hb at her 20 week scan.

I can't go to the midwife for her to check as my car is currently knackered and she is 20 miles away.

I feel so normal, but just with a little bit of a bump... anyone else know what I mean?

Feel free to tell me I'm being daft!

I didn't feel movements at that stage in my first pg

Could you ask MW if you can have your 20 week scan at , er, 20 weeks rahter than 22?! Surely with your history she'll appreciate that its importnat for you to be reassured!

I think I was 21 weeks ish before I felt my first flutterings

belgo · 03/11/2008 13:02

It is normal not to feel any kicks yet, sometimes not until 22 weeks. It depends on the position of your placenta and the position of your baby. I don't think it really has anything to do with how much 'padding' you have, as you feel the kicks from inside, not outside.

Try not to worry, although I know it's hard - I've had miscarriages myself and it is very hard to relax.

I think everyone's different wrt when they first feel movement. If you're slimmer you are likely to feel it sooner though, I think. If you are worried, could you go to the GP and ask them to check with a sonic aid?

firstontheway · 03/11/2008 13:33

I'm 20+3 today and still feeling no kicks. Not even tiny flutterings or anything. Which was very worrying, especialy since one of my friends with exactly the same due date started feeling movements about 16 weeks and is now getting full on kicks... very annoying! But she's quite slim and I'm usually a size 14 and now have almost 'ready to drop' sized bump due to bread craving in first 3 months so maybe that has something to do with it?

Anyway, I went for a private scan last week (also had a miscarriage and am ultra paranoid!) and all was well, saw her kicking around, she's obviously just a bit of a wimpy weakling so try not to worry, but if you can,try making appt with the midwife so she can listen with a doppler just to put your mind at rest. Also, a lot of people have said the best place to feel movement is in the bath... tap on the side of the tub and the water makes the noise loud for bubba which makes her startle and eact. Hasn't worked for me yet, but ho hum.

firstontheway · 03/11/2008 13:36

Oh sorry didn't read post properly about not being able to see midwife. Well, my mws only around 1 day per week and she said if I was worried in the meantime to contact hospital delivery suite (was only 15 weeks at this point) as they have a section there so you can pop in and have someone listen with a doppler. Though they may not consider non movement at this stage a reason to be worried?

grinningbee · 03/11/2008 14:02

Thanks for the replies everyone, and especially MamaG - how's the labour going??? Good luck!

I did wonder if it was a tad early to worry, seeing as it is my first. It just seems such a loooong time since my last scan (7 weeks ago today).

At my 16 week check up I asked if mw could listen to the hb, she tried for a couple of minutes and couldn't find it which didn't do anything for my nerves!

I shall wait out the next two weeks for the scan like a good girl... although I do have a whopping big box of Thorntons for comfort thanks to it being my birthday yesterday

Last question I promise - would you expect a more cuddly person to not really show until quite late on? I can see a small bump when I lay down, but other than that I look completely normal. Ok, as normal as a paranoid pg lady can look. I did lose 2 stone just before I got pg, so maybe junior has more room to grow into before becoming obvious!!!

I didn't show until I was about 6 months pg with first baby, think thats very normal!

Hello, I've just posted a question about movements too - it's such a common subject on here!

I was just like you, didnt feel anything really, then the 20wk scan she casually mentioned my placenta was stuck on the front so I wouldnt really feel much anyway.

My colleague, who is irritatingly calm about everything to do with her pregnancy, said she didnt feel ANYTHING AT ALL until 21 weeks when he kicked her pretty hard the day before her scan.

She's just gone on ML.

Try not to worry - I had a miscarriage too and it's shitty isnt it. I bought a doppler off ebay, came the nexy day and has completely saved me. I listen for about 2 seconds every three days or something, just to hear that reassuring thumping.

It's not unusual for MW not to hear heartbeat apparently, so dont worry.

LoveActually · 03/11/2008 15:49

Hello GrinningBee I felt first movements (like bubbles!) at 17 weeks - my midwife told me to expect to feel bub earlier than normal I'm on the small side and that the average is about 20-22 weeks. My sister's curvier than me and she felt her DD1 at 22 weeks and didn't show until 6 months.
Hope that helps.

grinningbee · 04/11/2008 08:23

Thanks everyone.

I love the term fluffy Hedgewitch. I also know what you mean about not being able to look at the thread. Are you still waiting for your 20 week scan as well?

Well, we got around to opening the enormous box of choccies last night. Scoffed a few and laid down on the sofa... about 45 mins to an hour later, I felt what I can only describe as what felt like a muscle twitch twice in the bottom of the bump area. It happened again a short while later. Could that have been bean? I don't know how else to describe it.

I tried the tapping on the bath thing this morning, but no joy...

Ooooh you lucky thing on both counts!

My scan isn't until the 17th. I've decided to believe that last nights twitches were bean, and therefore eating thorntons choccies are what it likes 'cos it moves.

It's my theory, and I'm sticking to it for as long as the box lasts!

We'll see in half an hour or so if marmite on toast has the same effect

Melmam at mw for you! I think maternity clothes companies are the same, given that they seem to think anyone over a size 16/18 obviously never has babies...

Hi Grinning - I think you've had your mind put at rest now but I know EXACTLY how you are feeling. Our thread has people talking of babies doing flips and kicking all day long, whereas I hadn't felt a thing at all. I had even thought about borrowing a friend's doppler to check the HB to put my mind at rest, as my scan isn't until Thursday (not long now, I s'pose). Anyway, having worried myself silly, I finally felt the babe whilst sitting on a plane waiting to take off from Dublin, when I was bored and hadn't got anything else to think about. Suddenly I felt what I would normally have passed off as wind in my gut and thought "hang on a sec - that's not a fart brewing, I think that's the baby!". So have only been feeling it for a day (last night and now sitting here, typing this) and I am 21 weeks exactly. So you are still a little way behind me and I'm sure things will kick off (ahem) in the next couple of weeks.

Why are you not on the AN thread at the moment? Did I miss something (or are you talking about Pumpkin?)

xxx
