i had a routine appt with my mw today and I am measuring at 39.5cm (I am 34 weeks on friday) this is my third baby, both others were 8lb plus and now i'm really worried that this will be a whooper. I am seeing a consultant on monday, and having a scan (my care is usually all midwife led) Has anyone else had this? I am only 5ft 4" and not a large person, and I really don't want a c section. I'm hoping that I may be induced early?

HI I measured big with my 1st but they didn't think it was a problem. I later had a 9lb 1oz and a traumatic delivery.
I'm 5'2 and size 8-10
For my second I expressed concerns as I was measuring too big for dates at the 20 weeks scan so I had regular growth scans every 4 weeks till 36 weeks. They said they would induce me should the baby still be large. They then did a u-turn and said they didn't induce for big babies ds 2 was 1/2 oz off 10lbs, got stuck and had to be forcepped out which caused a 3rd degree tear.

I have heard do many people say they were told they were having a big baby but it turned out to be small or an averaged sized baby but equally there are people like me who measured big, grew big and did actually have big babies.

We are currently ttc no 3 and will be asking for an elective c-section.

Thanks muppetgirl. I've had the same midwife each time and she's been a midwife for yonks, is the old style who kind of lets you get on with it etc, and with the other 2 she suggested that they would be slightly bigger (my last was 8lb 15oz) so for her to send me to be seen made me a little concerned. I have low BP and SPD and my daughter is quite badly asthmatic and this is the worst time of year for her illness wise so am really fed up anyway so I will try and press for an induction, as the other 2 I also went over due with

hmmmmmm, 3rd will prob be bigger, but maybe not humungous.....?

I'm in same boat, kind of, scared this one (3rd) will be 10lb ish - I think I want an elective

sorry, useless post! good luck!

AllieBongo · 29/10/2008 18:58

thanks for that anyway! I don't want a c section at all. I have 2 other kids and my sons school is 5 miles away so I would be buggered

that's the thing, isn't it? once you have kids it'd leave you so inacapacitated

Hi AllieBongo. I'm currently measuring 5cms over. I'm expecting a large baby (DD was 10lbs 12oz), however they sent me for a growth scan and he is well within the normal range of size. I think the measurements can be deceptive - two people I work with measured too small, were really worried, and both went for scans. One baby is normal, and one baby is slightly bigger despite the smaller bump! The scan will hopefully put your mind at rest.

Hi AllieBongo, Have just logged on and found this discussion which interested me as I am in the same boat. Like you I am 34 weeks and mesasuring 39 weeks. Did this with both of my previous boys, but was told with number 2 that my placents stops working so they eventually stop growing and both of them came early. Am hoping this one will do the same otherwise it might have to be a c-section for me which I don't really want as induction is out of the question given I had to have a section with number 2. Had a scan yesterday and was told this one is about 6lb 14 now so like you I'm hoping for an early delivery. Baby may not be as big as you think, with number one he measured 4 weeks bfds from 32 weeks and was here just after 36 weeks, so the baby may decide they've had enough of being cramped up.

Hi I measured big with both of mine. With DD1 they sent me for a scan which showed she was normal sized and arrived 10 days late at 8lb 3oz. With DD2 I also measured big but refused a growth scan because I didn't think she was. She arrived 2 weeks early weighing 5lb exactly. I am not convinced that measuring is a very acurate way to determine baby size.

AllieBongo · 29/10/2008 20:20

hopefully the scan will clear things up. I certainly feel full to capacity, and compared to other pgs have felt huge earlier. The baby was breech up until sunday, it was not pleasant when he turned! when the mw palpated the baby she said he felt a good size also, hence sending me for the scan. i'm not worried about being induced, and like you say sophie, i suppose there is only so much pressure things will take before something gives!

same situation here. 3rd pg, they keep getting bigger, am worried now as 37 weeks and baby already large. do not want c-section.

so do they induce or not for big babies?

dinny · 29/10/2008 20:26

I think you can tell if you are carrying a big baby - I certainly could with ds and I can again now (23 weeks)

dizzywitches · 29/10/2008 20:27

I was induced for a large baby with dd1, she was 10lb4 and I wish I hadn't been induced

dd2 was 11lb1 and dd3 was 9lb14 - don't panic and if you can avoid induction I personally would

good luck

AllieBongo · 29/10/2008 21:59

thanks all. I was induced with dc1, so kind of know what to expect. I am struggling to get about now due to the SPD so want this baby out!
