Just wanted to ask if anyone knows of cold medicines you can take in early pregnancy (6wks). I started off with a bad stuffy nose and now it wont stop running along with a little stuffiness a the same time. It feels like its in my sinuses because all up my nose and behind my eyes is burning and tingling. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Don't know of any remedies, but I do rememeber reading somewhere that a stuffy and/or runny nose is actually one of the early signs of pregnancy. Something to do with the increase in blood flow. Maybe its not just a cold.

Threeangels, know the feeling very well - I've felt like I have a tickly, nasal cold for about...oh, 17 weeks now! I think this is entirely connected with your recent good news. I have been finding a little pine and eucalyptus oil on my pillow at night helps. The only thing you can safely take for a cold in early pregnancy is paracetamol (and I am sure it is called something else in the USA), but it doesn't help with stuffiness.

I've been using Karvol as it doesn't give any warnings re: pregnancy. Luckily I only occassionally get it otherwise I think dh would move into another room (although having the whole bed does have its appealing moments!)

Thanks all. The stuffiness isnt quite as bad is the burning feeling in my nose and the pain in my eyes. I do remember having this with my last pregnancy. It just seems so much worse. I feel so awful that I went to church (dragged myself of course) and then wait straight to bed. Thanks for the advice. I think I'll go heat a wet cloth for my face. Maybe this will help releive it a little.

i am also in very early pregnancy and have a 'proper' cold - headaches, chestiness, aching limbs. can i take paracetamol does anyone know?

threeangels · 05/03/2003 22:14

Hi buttercup - Sorry your suffering the same as me. I looked up on yahoo and everyone says it's known to be safe in early pregnancy. The only negative thing I read was heavy use of it in late pregnancy was known to cause wheezing in the early years of childhood. Seems fine other then that.

I was given Sudafed while I was pregnant. Very good for draining and clearing your sinuses.

Paracetamol is what the docs and MWs advise if you need to take anything. Don't think you should take anything else though and over-the-counter medicines often have other ingrediants so I'd steer clear of those and stick with Paracetomol. Eucalyptus Oil etc are fine as well (on your pillow etc of course).

I've had 2 heavy colds back to back for almost a month now so feeling very miserable. Can't stop coughing and terrified my waters are going to break (17 wks). DS came to bed last night with an ear infection and promptly wet the bed - spent the never 10 minutes panicking that it was my waters breaking! He is right as rain this morning - I am dead on my feet
