MW said that if baby is breech, if I want to, they will try to turn him whilst scanning him to check the cord doesn't get in the way. Apparently I'll be given a muscle relaxant ().

All sounds a bit gruesome - I didn't ask at the time, but the "if I want" bit has made me wonder - are there any downsides to this procedure?

TIA

Yes that would be nice for you - only 6 days and then your parents will be with you to help out.

PIL in France at the moment, not sure when they're coming back but apparenlty they're setting off as soon as DH tells them I'm in labour - have told DH to hold off on that call bless 'em, they mean well ...

LOL

My brother's youngest daughter was a CS on his birthday and if I go to term this one could be a CS the week of my partners birthday (if they really won't let me have a VBAC). Sounds like a wonderful birthday present to me

oh, my mother's sister has a flat in Paris, so they are going there for Xmas to meet her up and go do whatever French people do at Xmas.

MamaG · 17/10/2008 15:03

I'm really hoping my PIL go to their house in France for Christmas, so we can go stay in their nice big warm detached uk house with a big full freezer and wine cellar

I always tell her I wish I had her life. And she laughs her throaty smoker giggle and says, 'Ah, well, I know how lucky I am.'

MamaG - my DD was my 1st, breech and 9lb12. She was born at home as a breech baby. I had the best birth of anyone I know and needed next to no pain relief (TENS for the 1st stage and nothing at all for the 2nd). According to my MWs (I used IMs so I could be sure they had a lot of breech experience), a lot of women find breech births less painfull than cephalic ones.

As long as you can find a MW with breech skills a breech baby doesn't mean you HAVE to have a CS. If you want to do some reading about vaginal breech birth, google Mary Cronk.

IIRC, broad brush stats are that 50% of ECVs are successful - but that will vary with the skill of the practitioner (so its worth asking for their personal success rates), the position of the baby (full breech is more likely to turn than frank/extended breech) and the position of the placenta / length of cord. If scan shows your DC is breech, you still don't have to have the ECV just because you're there, and you can ask tell them to stop at any time if you want to.

(oh - and my MWs recommended a glass of good red burgundy as an iron boost. I loved my midwives )

How are you doing, MamaG - did you go for the scan?

thatsnotmymonster · 19/10/2008 23:14

My MW told me she thought dd2 might be breech just as she was about to break my waters! I said, 'doesn't that mean it will be more painful?' to which she repled, 'no'.

Turn out she just had a really small bony bottom which felt like her head!

MamaG · 20/10/2008 13:23

I had my scan this morning and he's NOT breech. Phew! Also, he's average size so no huge heifer baby to push out!! Around 7.5lbs they thought.

Thanks for asking

Yeah Fingers crossed you have a good birth of your not-monster baby

Heifer · 24/10/2008 14:09

um, DD was average size at every scan (had loads due to fibroads)...

She was 10 days late and ended up 9.11..... so don't count your chicks just yet MamaG..

Glad all is well though and baby is not breech...
