appendicitis in pregnancy?

Ive done a search on the threads and can see that some Mnetters have had this but they are only referred to, i cant find a personal account.

Im 36 weeks pregnant and prior to pregnancy used to get severe abdominal intermittant pain. I was checked for ovarian cyst and that was clear, they tried to scan for appendix but it was obsured by "gas in the bowel" ha ha!

Since being pregnant the pain really eased, and i was obviously pleased! This week however the pain is back, its exactly the same pain and i can feel its in the same place but is being pushed towards my back so the pain in in my right side and in my back. If the baby kicks there it makes me want to be sick and if i press it its horrendous.

Im concerned that it may well be appendix troubling me but does anyone know what this means in latter pregnancy and how to do i get a doctor to take it seriously rather than telling me its the pregnancy which i can feel it isnt!

have you seen the posts by piffle? she had her appendix removed I think whilst quite pregnant

or put a shout out for her she's about quite frequently

(and does your DH not take you seriously? )

ha ha my Dh isnt a doctor despite my name, its a reference to moto gp rider valentino rossi. I should clarify that yes, as it does make my husband look incompentant ha ha, my real DH is actually a developer, he is no good with abdominal pain!

when i searched i can see threads that say piffle had this but i canrt find any account from her....

piifffflllleeeeeeeeee help!

Sorry, this probably isn't much help to you but a week after having dd2 i had terrible abdominal pain. The midwife said it was after pains, but I knew it wasn't. I went to the Dr who said it looked like appendicitis, but it was too hard to tell, because all your organs/ bits and pieces are in the wrong place, so she just couldn't be sure. So I guess it would be even harder to diagnose now, but you should see a dr...

if the pain gets worse when you press on it (right side about half way between belly button height and hip then yes - that sounds like appendicitis. They do have trouble diagnosing it in pregnancy though - had a friend who had it on and off through her PG and eventually had it out when her DS was four months.

So if it is appendicitis, they can be okay to leave it til after the baby is born?

Most doctors have a very 'wait and see' approach to appendicitis. If they think the infection will die down again they will leave it where it is.

However I'm not keen on this, as last year they did this to me and were about to let me out of hospital to go home because I had stopped vomiting profusely (which actually, was because I hadn't been allowed to eat anything!) when my appendix exploded and I had to have emergency surgery.

Personally I would go for taking it out rather than risking leaving it to explode which would put your DC at risk when peritonitus sets in. (Which is pretty much immediately)

I think what happened with my friend was that she had such bad morning sickness they chalked it up to that when she was pregnant, and when it continued post birth they finally decided it was time to take it out.

Good luck at the docs and remember not everybody vomits.

Honestly, hope all is resolved soon.

went to docs and they advised that as i have no issues with poo and i havent been sick they are not concerned with appendicitis. She pressed the tender area and i just about yelled the surgery down!!

she says that the baby is probably stretching my ovary or kinking a fallopian tube but i had these pains long before i was pregnant. arghh frustrated as i knew they would attribute it to the baby although they can see on my notes it was before.

they said if pain gets worse or still there after baby to go back. really down as it hurts like hell but evidently pain isnt enough, i need diarrohea too!
