Didn't touch a drop for the 3 months leading up to DD's conception, then for the whole pregnancy. Am now 5mths and now and again, really fancy a glass of wine. Not a large glass, not every night, but just now and again, maybe once during the week, once during the weekend. Friends are split down the middle. Some did, some didn't but all their little ones are absolutely fine.

Did you/Are you drinking occassionally during pregnancy. If you did, did you or your DC suffer as a result?

have had it whenever i fancied it in all my pregnancies, but i've never felt very well through any of them so have had only very limited amounts.

littlefrog · 14/10/2008 19:27

when pg with ds life was v stressful and i used to REALLY want something to drink in the evenings, but somehow, when it came to it, almost always one sip was more than enough: it tasted really strong and sour. So I didn't forbid myself, but nor did I really drink much at all.

MovinMovinMovin · 14/10/2008 19:27

I didn't with dd1, did with dd2 and am doing with dc3, but not a lot

ohdearwhatamess · 14/10/2008 19:29

Nothing when pg with ds1.

Glass a week when pg with ds2 (after 12 week point).

No obvious signs yet that ds2 has suffered.

nickytwoooohtimes · 14/10/2008 19:30

I had the odd glass throughout. I'd do the same next time too.

compo · 14/10/2008 19:31

I had the odd glass of wine, half a pint of cider
Was at a wedding at about 5 months pregnant and had a large glass of wine by mistake (ad ordered a small glass). It took me an age to drink it but some 'friend' still managed to comment on whether or not I should be drinking it

BlueCowWonders · 14/10/2008 19:32

went right off wine with all pgs, but developed a taste for very 'hoppy' beers! Didn't feel bad about alcohol, just one more thing that I'm not fussed about when pg.

chandellina · 14/10/2008 20:00

i drank about a glass of wine a week, sometimes two. DS seems fine ...

brettgirl2 · 14/10/2008 20:20

Am avoiding wine, because the trouble is that I just like it too much!

I am allowing myself a little half of beer occasionally though, because although I like beer I can quite happily drink a half and not want any more.

The reason they say don't drink is that someone sees you are allowed 2 units, pours themselves two large glasses of wine and consumes 7 units in one go - clearly not a good idea! When my mum way pg they told them to drink guinness.

I used to buy those tiny bottles of wine, too, and say that was my 'ration' for the week. Quite often I'd have some left at the end of the week but it helped in a way as I wasn't tempted to exceed the limits I'd set for myself (DH doesn't drink wine, only beer which I am never tempted by).

JezzaJ9 · 15/10/2008 13:14

I had a few heavy nights before I found out I was PG a bit worrying but all is as well as it can be now at 32.3. I have not touched a drop since and felt slightly nervous about doing so. Definitely not judging anyone who does I have loads of friends that have their is something just holding me back! I can't wait for a glass of Vino Rosso at Christmas as well Nuclear!

WorzselMummage · 15/10/2008 13:35

I have had an occasion small lass of wine of lager shandy but less then once a week so not atall bothered.

I did the same with DD and she's fine

Ineedsomesleep · 15/10/2008 13:37

Like you MrsOCD I really fancied a small one every now and then. I did with both DS & DD and they are both fine.

Neeerly3 · 15/10/2008 13:54

i think i have a glass maybe once a week if that.....

CantSleepWontSleep · 15/10/2008 13:58

Didn't with either of mine. IMO it's a very small sacrifice to make for a few months.

Did drink (and smoke) prior to finding out that I was pg with the one I miscarried.

MorrisZapp · 15/10/2008 14:35

My sil smokes and drinks quite heavily, and didn't cut down either throughout all three of her pregnancies - ie, she drank wine every night, and smoked a pack a day right through with no break.

Her kids are fine. But that's not to say I condone or recommend it.

Bicnod · 15/10/2008 20:11

I was drinking like a fish in the run up to finding out I was pg (suprise baby) then stopped completely as soon as found out at 5 weeks pg. Am now 12+2 and it's my 30th birthday party in 9 days time - I intend to have a couple of glasses of champers on that day

I think you have to drink A LOT for it to have an adverse effect on the wee babbit.

Also, I find it quite insulting that the gvt has changed its advice to 'don't drink anything during pregnancy' even though there is no new evidence - clearly gvt thinks pg women are incapable of knowing what a reasonable amount is/are incapable of controlling ourselves.

DoubleBluff · 15/10/2008 20:18

I had a few glasses a week on both, agree with Bicnod.

With DD (2y7m) I had one glass of Champers on a very special anniversary date at about 4.5 weeks but nothing else at all in the first trimester. In 2nd and 3rd trimesters I had a half of hoegaarden on a Friday night which was quite a ritual for me.

Christmas/NY/birthday (all within 9 days) was a challenge but managed to keep just about within the '1-2 units once or twice a week' advice which the govt were giving at the time.

I had 2 pregnancies earlier this year which both ended in miscarriage - both quite different. Both times I allowed myself 1 - 2 units once a week even in 1st trimester. But having just discovered that I'm pregnant again although I'll never know if the alcohol that caused the problems, I'm not taking any risks this time and won't drink anything until after 12 weeks. Then it will be a half of beer once a week as before.

Does having a beer as the highlight of my week make me a lush??

pluto · 16/10/2008 19:37

A glass of red on average on every ten - fourteen days now that I'm in the second trimester but only in company of DH. I don't think I would enjoy a drink with other people as I feel they would be judging me. A couple of fairly big boozy nights before discovered I was pg. This is my second child: with first I didn't touch a drop for entire pg, this time I feel more relaxed about it. I'm really pleased I've been able to cut back as I was probably drinking too much before I was pg.

mummy2000 · 16/10/2008 20:54

With both my pregnancies i went completly off alcohol in the first trimester. Had one drink when i was 4 months with my first one as it was a special occasion. Smoked all the way through my first but that was nine years ago and i was very young. I totally regret that now as my daughter is very small for her age and i feel i am to blame for that(i don't like to admit that to ppl i know tho). I kick myself every day because of it. I am still smoking at the moment and i'm 11 weeks but i am on the "stop smoking for baby" programme now which involves cutting down a lot then stopping completly. It's going well so far. I'm still hoping my daughter takes a growth spurt soon but i have been waiting for a while so far. She may remain small.

1stMrsF · 17/10/2008 11:37

I'm 10 weeks and haven't had a drop since conception (was not drinking during 2 week wait whilst TTC) and I'm not going to drink anything at all until past 12 weeks (even though it's my birthday on Monday ) However, I'm planning to enjoy the odd drink now and again throughout the rest of pregnancy - probably won't be more than one a month, but on special occasions e.g. Christmas, DH's birthday sort of thing. I think the important thing is to drink very little, quite slowly, with food - if you get drunk, baby gets drunk!
