Anyone know anything about Uterine Doppler scan results?

I've just come back from one and there is a problem with it. They've said they're not going to deal with it now because they're more concerned about the fact her weight has dropped below 10th %ile.

There is a notch on the left artery and they said the peaks are quite high. No one explained what this means.

I'm a bit worried because these tests are done to make sure I'm not attacking the placenta as I have Hughes Syndrome which is why I lost my first baby.

I'm not going to see them again until two weeks on Friday, they're leaving a gap because they said they can see better which way she's moving that way. So I have 18 days of not knowing what's going on.

My BP and urine levels were fine btw.

Sorry, I don't have any info or experience on this but thinking about you. Must be nerve-racking time. Can you call them back tomorrow now that you've had time to think and run your questions by them? It's always the way that the questions come later - so I'm sure they're used to it?

the doppler scan looks at the blood flow through the umbilical cord. A 'notch' shows that when it beats to send blood through a little is flowing back - the bigger the notch the more coming back (i.e. less going through) they would worry as the baby is not getting as much oxygenated blood as it needs, and this could be related to the slow growth. Big peaks are good though because IIRC this means a good deal of blood goes through your cord anyway - hence the back flow.

how pregnant are you and what medication?

also, if they are not seeing you until two weeks on friday it is not panic stations. They have not explained things to you well though

I'm 24 +1 weeks and on Heparin 40mg and Aspirin.

They said they're more worried about her dropping down past 10th %ile so not going to deal with the notch just yet - why they can't multitask I don't know!

It took two people to scan me because the vessels were so close together and then she was picking up the notch so she wanted to be sure she was seeing the right thing, so I was aware from then that there was a problem with it, then the doctor mentioned it briefly but said my consultant (it wasn't my clinic) wanted to deal with the weight issue first.

I'm the sort of person who has to understand everything, it's probably my main obsession/ compulsion!

poor you - how horrible. I remember being told about 'notches' but 'nothing too serious - not to worry' and I went to the loo and cried and cried. I happened to be taking part in a research study into cervix dilation so I had to go there and was all upset and she took the time to go through things with me and it was no where near as my imagination seemed to think it was.

I was at st thomas and I now have a boy (9 today!) and a beautiful girl - despite all my worries and concerns.

I cried a lot yesterday, after everything we've been through I could do with an easy pregnancy! I've had cervcal length scans from 16 weeks (goodness knows why as I got to 31 weeks last time) yesterday was my 9th scan.

I think the doctor was quite young so maybe didn't see how hard it would have been for me and she didn't have my notes so she may not have realised everything I've been through if she didn't read my green notes properly.
