Where can I buy a nice maternity coat? All the ones I have seen so far are a bit average/grim. Would like a long wool coat - preferably grey. Any ideas????

just buy a normal coat in a bigger size. If your anything like me you'll need it even after giving birth!!

isabella oliver here

stuff is lovely.

I wouldn't bother. They're never nice. Buy a bigger coat - nothing too fancy - and then treat yourself to another one if you lose weight quickly after the birth.

I tried the Isabella Oliver Grace coat, which looks fabulous on the website, but it did nothing for me ....made me look absolutely huge!
so I sent it back. I might try the cocoon coat ... but I would prefer something that was not black.
Thing is if I buy biger size for coat, then it is massive everywhere else, and possibly straining over tummy .... but guess I just need to find the right cut of coat - which has room for tummy expansion!!

this one is nice click on the grey box to see it in grey

i did buy a maternity coat and still wear it, it still looks nice.

umberella · 09/10/2008 08:23

depends what size/shape you are, but i was about sz 12 with big boobs and i found that as my tummy grew longer things made me look like a tank so wearing shorter things on top and leaving legs uncovered turned into a Good Thing!

I was looking for a maternity coat a few months ago and posted on MN. Someone said 'they all make you look like the back end of a bus'. I found this to be true

tinkisgoingtohaveagirl · 09/10/2008 08:28

i woulndt bother getting a maternity coat either most of the ones i have seen on the web are very expensive.
i bought a normal grey one from sainsburys in a size 20 is perfect and only £25

Try Topshop maternity - nice duffle type item and also a long check one in stock at present.

TinkerBellesMum · 09/10/2008 09:07

I've been making a list (no wool cause Tink and I are allergic) I agree Top Shop is the best for wool coats. I'm looking at JoJo, Blooming Marvellous and M&P they're all mainly parkers or trenchcoats.

Madigan · 09/10/2008 09:14

Umerella - I agree that Isabella Oliver one is very nice ... but cannot see it in grey! Only in cream ("oyster") or black .... think I might try the cream though ............ will it be warm enough though, as it is only short?

will check out top shop now

ok ... can't see any coats at all in Top Shop maternity online ... when I click on "jackets" it is just a blank page.

I can only see three on there, I was sure there was more than that there.

dinkystinky · 09/10/2008 14:31

There were definitely more coats than 3 in the topshop maternity store I went into last week.

jlh69 · 09/10/2008 19:29

I looked on US ebay a couple of weeks ago. There were quite a lot that would ship to the UK and still worked out cheaper than most UK ones. Have been lent a long greay one from Gap maternity but I haven't seen it here. Friend got in in the US.
I got a jacket from Zara maternity the other day- they do black and a sort of grey. £80 but much nicer material than the one I saw in Top Shop for £65. I reckon I could wrap it round a baby in a sling as well for more use!

Formes, do a beautiful winter black coat that you can wear from start to 9 months as the back is let out throughout your pregnancy.

I bought it as is very smart and edgy and will wear it happily when not pregnant.

Just go to www.formes.com/

chocbiscuits · 09/10/2008 22:02

I think there's one in jojo maman thats fleece with a piece you can remove down the middle with a zip for when you're not pregnant.
Personally, I think I'm going to wear an old one of my grandads!

TinkerBellesMum · 09/10/2008 22:19

There is choc, it's £44.10 to MumsNetters.

mrsfossil · 10/10/2008 22:24

Try blooming mavelous they have some in their new catalogue. I will need one soon, but don't want to buy a normal coat in a larger size as it will be bigger all over and i want to look normal with a bump not humpty dumpty.
