Baby's hands ????????????????????

Hi Ladies

Just wondered if anyone has any experience or advice regarding a baby not opening its hands during several scans. Am now 25+1 and at the 20 wk scan baby would not open its hands. There then followed 4 scans and an amnio which did (thankfully) rule out anything chromosomal.

However at a further scan last week baby still wouldn't open its hands and the consultant raised the "very small possibility" of a neuro-muscular problem. Can't find anything on the net and am really worried. Want to be able to look forward and enjoy pg but am worried something could be seriously wrong, event though consultant said on balance he thinks everything is okay.

Any experience of this?

This is first baby and can't believe how worried it all makes you!

No experience on opening hands in scans, but my dd didn't open her hands until she was about 5 months old. Up until that point, her thumbs were always tucked in, and her hands clenched into fists.

We were referred to a consultant paediatrician who examined dd's hands, x-rayed them and manipulated them. She basically said that everything was fine, and that in time, dd would start to use them.

She's now nearly 4 and her hands are absolutely fine. Funnily enough, she still tends to tuck her thumbs in, but then, I've noticed that my dh does it too!

Were tehy private scans?

I only ask because in my area then NHS does not check the structure of the hand but I went to the Fetal Medicine Centre on Harley Street where they spent hours waiting for my baby to open its hands so they could check them for signs of chromosonal problems.

I am afraid I can't help much as DD did eventually open her hands (after much, much prodding).

Try not to worry too much. Sometimes I think the more tests they invent, the more likely they are to find some "indicator" of a problem and get you all worried when 98% of the time the indicator means nothing.

Same as littlefish - DD2 always had clenched fists until about 4-5 months old. In fact, even in the school photo I had done of her and DD1, where she is nearly 1, she has her left hand tightly clenched (she looks like she is ready for a fight!)

Hope all is well with your bub
