Blocked sinus'/sinusitis, can I take anything?

Hi, I have sinusitis & was wondering if I can take anything for it.
I am 9+5 & have been awake all last night as anytime I lay down my head actually 'bubbles' by my ears & really hurts. I dozed for a bit this afternoon sitting up on the sofa but I feel awful!

Any suggestions?

TIA

Paracetamol.

for you. I know how horrible it is.

MissyK · 01/10/2008 20:26

I thought so, I've dosed myself up on it already today. I couldn't get to the gp today & decided they probably can't give me anything, looks like I am just going to have to ride it out & hope it goes away soon..

It's horrible though

Oh to be able to take something else for it.. Only 7 months to go

can you get hold of an oil burner and some peppermint oil or menthol or something - or put menthol in a bowl of steaming water - tho last time i did this i thought my eyeballs were falling out too
failing that karvol on your pillow? If it's ok for babies over a few months old then surely it will be ok for a pg mum? Not as if baby is going to directly breathe it in or anything
I used karvol (everywhere) when i was pg and no probs.
Don't think you can take meds other than paracetamol.

inhaling warm salt water works, will probably make you retch though

Sterimar is good - it's a nasal spray/sinus flush that is just saline - i.e. totally natural, no drugs. (It has a good squirter on it which is why I recommend it rather than making your own saline!!). Hold your head upside down, squirt some up each nostril, wait for a few seconds then blow your nose. Magic.

MissyK · 02/10/2008 10:58

Hi all, thanks for the advice I'll head to the shops after lunch & pick up some karvol & oils..
I have Sterimar at my mum's house I think - I'd totally forgotten about it, will pick that up too

Here's hoping for a clear head later on!!

try one of the sinus rinse kits or neti pots. It's a bit wierd at first because you have to squeeze saline solution up one nostril and let it run down the other side but it is fantastic at getting rid of sinusitis. I had been suffering for weeks adn it sorted it out within a day or so and it hasn't come back. It's also supposed to help you fight off infections if you do it regularly. I got a kit from Boots which wasn't that cheap but easy to use. Or look online, there's loads of different ones.

MissyK · 02/10/2008 22:12

Thanks Malloo I'm prepared to try anything at this stage, it's only been about 3-4 days but getting worse not better. I suffer from it quite a lot usually but know I can't take any of the drugs from my gp in my med box Something has to work!!
I'll send dh to boots tomorrow.

Make sure you do 'pinch nose & blow gently' (and then swallow afterwards)regularly. Helps me a lot.

I use a bit of Tiger Balm (it's essential oils & v. strong) on a bit of tissue & stuffed into my pillowcase, which helps me breathe at night, or perhaps you could use Olbas oil?

Hi, I had toothache last week and was advised by the the hospital to take co-codamol, a bit stronger than paracetamol but paracetamol based.

I also mentioned it to the midwife when I visited her last and she said it was fine.

TheGabster · 03/10/2008 20:25

OK - long suffering sinusitus sufferer here!! My tips from when I was pregers:-

Have mega hot shower, then
(gross bit coming up)
make a warm salt water solution, take a tea spoon and inhale five/ten spoons up each nostril.

It is DISGUSTING because it all comes back down again (blow nose repeatedly then), but if you do this morning and night I PROMISE you it helps big time.

Plus I used Karvol type stuff on tissue as previously suggested, and raised head jobbie/lots of pillows. In fact, good idea to get used to sleeping propped up - trained myself to do this and was a godsend as it was the only way I could get comfy in bed for the last 8 weeks!

moosemama · 03/10/2008 20:35

Am 27 weeks and have just had a fluey virus followed by sinusitis (second time this pregnancy - first time was about the same time as you).

GP recommended steaming my head four times a day minimum with eucalyptus or karvol. Plenty of hot drinks (hot squash is good as it really steams the pipes as it goes down), paracetamol and plenty of baths/showers.

It certainly seemed to work for me, pain was almost gone within 48 hrs, both times.

Hope I'm not to late and/or you are feeling better.

Carrierpenguin · 01/04/2015 22:29

Hi I have this problem too :-( anyone have anymore tips, I feel panicked by being blocked up...

scarednoob · 01/04/2015 22:36

This is awful, I feel so bad for you guys. Saline drops etc are way forward but also you can try:

Run shower for 10 mins on boiling hot, then inhale the steam for a bit

Airwaves chewing gum helped a surprising amount

Lots of pillows - don't lie flat

Hope it shifts soon for you

boatrace30 · 02/04/2015 07:24

I would see the GP, I also get sinusitis a lot. Though have avoided it so far during pregnancy, at 31weeks so fingers crossed! However, when I get it badly the only thing that works is antibiotics and there are ones that you can take while pregnant.
