Hi there

I have only just found out that I am pregnant and its far too early to start telling my work colleagues...only problem is that I have to go to a leaving do next week and they will all be very suspicious if Im not drinking.

I am reknowned for liking a glass of wine and they are all on the look out for suspicious behaviour anyway

Has anyone got any good excuses they have used?

am such a terrible liar !

on anti biotics

gem1981 · 26/09/2008 14:51

anitibiotics - no one will ask you what for

could you drive someone there - so you are the designated driver ?

say you have to ge up v early in the morning and drive a long drive so you want to be at your best.

gem1981 · 26/09/2008 14:51

congrats btw

greenlawn · 26/09/2008 14:52

On medication, driving, diet, or detox - I've used all four!

Myneaux · 26/09/2008 14:54

I had thought about antibiotics.....I have had a terrible cough all week so I suppose it could suddenly become a chest infection !!

I only live 2 miles out of the city centre on a major bus route/cheap taxi...so cant use the driving excuse.

If only I hadnt been such a good drinker before

I feel dreadful telling fibs but there is nothing else I can do....Im only 4 weeks so have loads of these tricky occasions coming up (I am right in thinking that most people wait 12 weeks before making any announcements?)

I had my 30th birthday when I was 5 weeks pregnant with my first. I got around the not drinking by drinking tonic water all night (pretend vodka tonics), just had to whisper to the bar staff. When I was at the table I just kept pretending to sip my wine (how sad can you get) and when no one was looking swapped my glass with DH's. If everyone else is getting pissed, they probably won't notice!

dinkystinky · 26/09/2008 15:35

Bladder infection - explains not drinking (antibiotics) and sticking only to water/soft stuff as well as the ridiculously frequent trips to the loo you'll be making...

MrsMonkey · 26/09/2008 15:36

Not toooo much tonic water though as it contains quinine.

BlingLovin · 26/09/2008 15:38

I like the hangover excuse..."Oh no, I am half dead from last night, I think I might pass out if I have another drink..."

PoppyFox · 26/09/2008 15:40

OK, here's what you do. Tell them wine is giving you migraines. You can have gin &bitter lemonif somebody buys you a drink. Drink a bit, spill the rest or lose it! Then drink a lemonade.

OR....... drink from a bottle of beer but get the bar man to fill it with diet coke for you

People only vigilant for the first two drinks anyway. after that, when they assume you're drinking, you could drink water all evening and they won't notice.

MadreInglese · 26/09/2008 15:40

Hangover is a good one as then no one clocks that you're not drinking at all because they think you got lashed the night before

(congrats btw)

Egg · 26/09/2008 15:41

I said that I had a blood test first thing the next morning and so could not have alcohol in system.

Congratulations!

Egg · 26/09/2008 15:42

Or can you be driving home?

ajm200 · 26/09/2008 15:50

Congratulations.. I'd go with antibiotics or a long drive the next day..

summerbird · 26/09/2008 21:04

jade1978 · 27/09/2008 20:25

Same situation for me to, its my 30th birthday in a few weeks and desperate not to tell anyone till after, its my 5th so can't be doing with the comments just yet!! I think i will have to use the anti biotics trick, but doubt anyone will believe me!!

brettgirl2 · 28/09/2008 08:35

I'd just keep your fingers crossed that you feel well enough to go....

How about a stomach ulcer? (more original, but I always think slightly wrong to wish medical problems on yourself)

SqueakyPop · 28/09/2008 08:37

You are driving.

Lizzylou · 28/09/2008 08:38

You made a complete fool of yourself last time you drank and have decided to "make like a celeb" and go detox??

Myneaux · 29/09/2008 09:43

Thanks for the excuses and congratulations everyone !

I think I will go with the bladder infection...after all no one will want me to elaborate any further.

will be very interesting seeing eveyrone else getting drunk while I stay sober....I dont think Ive been on a night out wihout drinking since I was 16.

Introduce 'sharkwatch' at work, where when drinking in large parties, one stays sober to keep an eye out for the group (muggers, drink spikers etc)then volunteer to do it!

Congratulations - I remember this time being so special - just you & DP sharing the biggest secret - wanting the world to know & none to know at the same time!

i found out I was expecting early december! It weas a nightmare with Christmas & New Year!! So I was either driving, had to be up for some important reason at some insane time early the next morning or not feeling well (with my MS it was the most convincing)The urine infection is a really convincing one as you also have to drink lots of water, which for me was great as I dont like fizzy drinks unless they have vodka in them!

I also switched to drinking beer, which meant that my DH got absolutely blotoed on New Years Eve, on only 4 pints of lager as he was also secretely drinking my bottles!

I have just found out no2 is on the way & we have a family do tomorrow but as I have only been back at work a couple of weeks my excuse for tomorrow is that I am a very conscientious employee who has to get up for work in the morning! (and get DS ready for CM at the same time too!) That is quite believable for me too as I have become such a light weight!
