Scan at 6wks + 6 showed heartbeat but baby smaller than expected. Anyone had a similar experience and what was the outcome?

I've just had a scan at 6 weeks and 6 days according to my calculations. There was a heartbeat but the baby's size was estimated as being just under 6 weeks. I'd like to know if anyone has been in a similar situation and what the outcome was.

I know things are not looking brilliant and as I have already had 3 miscarriages, I am preparing for the worst.

I would actually find it helpful if people could tell me about both positive and negative stories. That way I could try to get an idea of how many people it went right for compared to the number of people it went wrong for.

Incidentally, I'm pretty sure if my dates as I got a strong BFP 10 days after when I thought I ovulated.

I'd think nothing of it. This happened to me with my first pregnancy and I ended up having 3 early scans to check everything was OK, which of course it was.
Currently pg and decided against any early scans because I don't think they tell you much and aren't worth the stress, this is despite the fact that I have had a miscarriage.
Have you got an appointment for another scan in a couple of weeks or are they happy everything is OK?

Hi I am currently 14 weeks with this pregnancy and had a scan at 7weeks 4 days by my lmp, they put me at 6 weeks & 2 days by scan, saw a heartbeat but I was very worried as I had had 3 m/c and that happened to me with my 2nd m/c, spoke to them and told them my concerns,so had another scan at 10 weeks which put me 5 days behind my dates and just had dating scan which put me 2 days behind what I thought! Consultant said they are not worried about dates that early on as you could of ovulated later and scans that early on are much harder to date and best to wait for the dating scan. Have you got another scan booked?
I hope it all turns out o.k for you, I know exactly what your feeling, let us know how it goes and try and relax for the next few weeks

I had a scan at 7 weeks and was definate on my dates and my baby was measuring up as 6 weeks. By the time I went for a scan at 10 wks they'd caught up. I guess they all grow at different rates. Good luck.

very similar, I knew my dates were correct when I had a scan at something like 7+2 weeks but size of sac made me apparently only 6 weeks. I have never suffered a miscarriage, thankfully, but it took me a long time to conceive DS so I had similar anxieties about losing a very precious pregnancy.

I had another scan at 10 weeks and everything was on track.

DS was incidently 8 days late. Who knows - some just "bake" slowly? I don't think conception and pregnancy are the exact science they are made out to be.

I was also told my baby was small at that stage - however they also told me in no uncertain terms that before 7-8 weeks the baby is so small that they can't measure it properly anyway

I really hope things turn out well. My first pg was put back by 2 weeks (at your stage they tried to say 3!) I refused to believe them. But my 2nd has just been put back 12 days so maybe I was wrong both times? Who knows. Keep thinking positive thoughts.

I had a scan at what I thought was 7 weeks exactly. Saw heartbeat but they said baby was a few days smaller than this.So I went back for a scan 3 weeks later (should have been 2 weeks but we were away) and they confirmed that my dates were out slightly as the 10 week scan confirmed I was a few days behind.

I then had a scan at just under 13 weeks and it was dated as bang on dates. The first two were done at a private clinic and the second at nhs hospital. Don't know if the measurements were different or just that the baby had a late spurt. I am now 15.5 weeks.

In hindsight (and I know its too late) but I don't think I'd advise a scan so early as a couple of days difference at this stages shows as a much bigger difference than at say 10 weeks. I had an early scan too for similar reasons to you so don't blame you at all.

Thanks once again for the reassurance. At the mo I am veering between optimism and then resignation that it's all going to go wrong. Possibly doing extensive Google searches was a pretty stupid move as I discovered more and more things to be worried about!

For what it's worth, I think you are absolutely right Wheelybug, and if I get pregnant again I am not going to have such an early scan. I had been keeping quite a good lid on my anxiety up until I got the news about the size of the baby. Knowing this information isn't going to change the outcome - it's just making me a basketcase.

This thread is a blast from the past. I don't remember starting it. Just replying because I got an email alert from MN saying I'd been mentioned in a post.

Unfortunately, the pregnancy did not stick. However, I got pregnant the month after my MC. I found out on Xmas day 2008, and dc3 was born happy and very healthy 9 months later. She's now a completely delightful 12 year old.

I'm sorry you are going through this @StillTrying1000. I remember only too well the sadness of MC, and the trauma of it happening over and over. I was pretty much a basket case in my last pregnancy . Things had gone wrong so often, it was hard to believe a positive outcome was possible.

I am currently pregnant after 3 losses. I had to go for a scan to confirm viability at 6 weeks which I did going from my first day if my last period.

They could only see gestational sac and yolk sac. Two weeks later I was only 6 weeks 5 days with a heart beat. A week later I was 8 weeks 2 days.

Went for 12 week scan thinking I would be just under 13 weeks and I was measuring 13 weeks 3 days and my due date is bang on what I thought it was if they had listened to me regarding the fact I know I ovulate late in my cycle.

I know how worrying it can be , especially after a loss. My mantra is I'm not bleeding, I have no signs of loss but plenty of being pregnant xx
