Nuchal Scan results (Kingston Hospital)

Hi ladies,

I have my nuchal scan in a few weeks and have just been going over the info I was given at booking in appointment.

As I understand it they will not give any results at the actual scan, until they have the results back from the bloods and can give a combined result. I understand why they do this. But...I am not sure that I'm completely happy with only having a 'screen positive' or 'screen negative' result. I would actually like to know the probability of an issue. Is there any way that I can insist on them giving me more detailed results? Or have I misunderstaood and they will do this anyway...?

They will probably give you a measurement at least. You can seach on the internet to discover what these means in terms of probabilies.

It only takes a couple of days for the results to come through. At the scan they were quite thorough checking everything and when i got the results of the blood tests & scan combined it showed all the workings out and then gave you the '1 in x' result for all three conditions. I had mine done in Bournemouth but i guess it is the same for everywhere else.

When I did it privately (no other way here) I was told the 'new' way of doing it is to have the blood analysed beforehand (week 9 supposed to be best). Was sent a tube and had NHS MW get some blood out which I sent off to London myself.

When I had the actual scan at week 12 the blood results were back and the combined result was given to us then and there.

Lucia - I really hope I get the infroamtion you did. I have been told it will be 2 weeks for results and that they will send a letter stating simply 'screen negative' or 'screen positive'. Maybe I can ask for the calculations if they really aren't specific...

Can I ask what 3 conditions they tested for? IS it not just Down's?

I had ds at Kingston in June '07 and although I can't remember if it was at the scan or an appointment afterwards I definitely got a 1 in x result because they told me the calculation first with my age and then adjusted with the nuchal fold measurement. I guess things might've changed since then but I hope not because I'm now pregnant again and like you would like to know exact statistics.

I am booked to have my second baby at Kingston. At the nuchal scan they wouldn't tell me anything (but held the paper with the results upside down in front of me so it was easy to read the measurements, which was reassuring). When the results came it was as 1 in x chance rather than just a positive or negative.

My friend had a nuchal at Kingston a couple of weeks ago. I think she had the bloods a week or so before the actual scan. When she got the results it was a 1 in x type result. (BTW she got around 1 in 700 at Kingstona and 1 5,000 at the Fetal Med Centre.

I went privately at the FMC but friends have recently had theirs at Kingston. You can get a number of just the nuchal during the scan (just ask), they take your blood at the same appointment of the scan but you then get a combined result of 1:x about a week later by post. You only get a risk for Downs.

At FMC you have the blood test half an hour before your scan. At the scan they give you the result of the nuchal fold as well as the result of the blood test and the combined result. Also they give you a result for Turners and Edwards too. Other things you are given/they check at the scan are the slant of the face (in degrees) as its an indicator of downs, they look at various heart function, check the spine is closed, brain fine for that stage, and they can even tell from the scan if you are at greater risk for pre-eclampsia. It was the best £150 I have ever spent.

IMO its worth going private if you are in late 30s or above and can afford it of course.

Wow, Jem1969 - that's a HUGE variation in results!!! Can I ask why she was having the scan done at both places - for reassurance only? OR was she concerned that the test was inaccurate?

Am also in at Kingston. My nuchal scan is next week. My booking-in appointment was when I was 8.5 weeks and they took bloods then. This is a change to how they did it previously (last 2 times had the scan first then the booking-in appointment). This is specifically so that they have the results of the blood tests for your scan. Did you not get your blood taken?

Flirtythirty- reassurance really. Obviously the Kingston result was OK but hoped it would be better I think. She was much happier after FMC just because they take so much time looking at everything and explaining it all every step of the way.
If you're older and can afford the £150 and get to London I think it's well worth it. I had my 12 week on both times and have the anomaly there next week.

Also- all of FMC's profits are ploughed back into their charity for research etc so you don't really feel you are lining some Harley Street Doc with cash for the hell of it

Hi, I had a nuchal scan at Kingston and they gave me the result there and then. This was a couple of years ago, though, so it's possible it has changed.

I have just had a combined test at kingston - they don't give you any further info then and there although I did manage to get my measurement so could look it up myself afterwards. My combined result took 2 weeks to come through by post (they ring if there's a problem) and you get a screen neg/pos and a 1: X factor.

Hi FT sorry havent logged on for a few days. I cant remember the chromosome numbers they use other than 13 and 21 but the tests are for Downs, Edwards and another condition which I think is quite rare anyway. On my letter is showed the risk factor for each one based on each factor ie my age, blood test, nuchal measurement etc and then showed the adjusted factor taking them all into account which is the one which matters. Mine was 1 in 4500 for Downs and then 1 in over 50,000 for the other two. It stated in the letter that came with it that I was considered low risk. It is much more accurate than the way they used to do it using just the scan and giving you the results on the day.
