We got our blood test back for downs syndrome and NT defects and we're not recommended for further testing, does anyone know if 1 in 5400 is a good result? Also I've been told my blood has a hb of 15.9, but have no idea what that means can anyone explain? She asked me at the appointment if I smoke and I don't and never have but it's got me thinking there's something bad and when I tried to ask her to explain the results the phone rang and so I didn't get a response. Any ideas??

I dont know anything about the downs syndrome results.
But your Hb is very good and quite high for a woman, which is great cos your baby will eat into that through pregnancy. Normal is about 12-14, mine is about 10 always but went down to 8 when pg

1 in 5400 is very good. I was pleased with 1 in 1300 or so in my most recent pregnancy.

Your hb of 15.9 means you don't have iron deficiency anaemia and won't have to take those nasty constipating tablets! What's your secret? My hb is only 9.4 despite the spinach and steak!

Your downs syndrome test results indicate there's very little chance of you having a downs baby. In the leafet I got from the clinic it says that typical chance of having a downs baby is:

age 25 - 1 in 1500
age 30 - 1 in 910
age 35 - 1 in 380
age 40 - 1 in 110

so if your blood test says you have a 1 in 5400 chance that's very low and you don't need to worry!

Thanks everyone, I had no idea what the results meant and i'm relieved to know all this. I am only 23 so maybe that has effected the downs result, I wasn't actually going to have the screening as I wouldn't have considered an abortion if the test had been high risk and my mom was given a low risk result with me and I was fine, but it meant that she worried a lot about my health. Funnily enough I do actually eat spinach and steak, but not consciously. I like all types of food and I have a lot of variety in my diet although it's not always really healthy. I was worried about the smoking comment as my parents have smoked around me since I was a child so I thought that may have something to do with it. Thanks again for the replies xx

sorry I meant my mother had a high risk (not low risk) result.

The smoking question is just a standard one as far as I know.
