Anyone know anyone who has got PG after being sterilised??? Or know the success rates etc.....

I am being sterilised after I have DC3 in Nov and was wondering if I can rely on it being 100% effective.

Anyone???

No sorry, it is not 100% effective. The failure rate is quoted as 1 in 200, although it may be a bit better than that.

Why sterilization in particular? There are lots of alternative methods that are equally long term, and more effective - and reversible should you change your mind.

Hi a lot of my friends are sterilised and none have became pg.
I have a friend who got sterilsed 8 weeks after her baby was born decided it was a huge mistake and went for a reversal, (huge op) and has been trying since (5 yrs) without success.
Now they are on the ivf waiting list (sad) i feel so sorry for her, as she did it because of family saying they have enough kids and shouldnt have anymore (she has 4) but each to their own i say!

Anyway back on subject i think it is extremely rare for a woman to get pg after sterilisation, it may be down to they way they get strilised some of my friends have a clip on their tubes and some say their tubes have been cut completely and sealed. so i dont know which is more effective! But even coil or injection contraception methods are not always 100% reliable, i think it is still a rare few it happens to. Good luck

Ps forgot to say what about yor dp/dh (sorry assuming you are together with someone) could he get a vasectomy (sp) it is an easier op on the male and if you want to reverse has a higher success rate!

it is less succesful i beleive if done during a c section

why not have a coil? a mirena is just as effective and can be removed if you change your mind

i suppose it also depends on your age, i personalyl would not consider it until i was 40 +

I have been sterlilised....nearly 4 years now....no baby has arrived even though i would love it to happen.

I think its more likely after a vasectomy. If you do both then i am sure you will be fine.

I didn't want DC3 and even went so far as to get a referral for a termination, but in the end couldn't go through with it. (see TONS of previous threads about this).

I had the Mirena fitted after DC2 and it lodged in the side of my uterus and had to be removed, it turns out I had actually got PG with the Mirena and the removal forced a M/C. I cannot take hormonal contracptives for medical reasons and DC3 has only happened because the condom didn't do what it says on the tin!! DH woould have the snip (and still might) I just want to cover all the bases and be steralised as well. We are both 100% sure that this will be our last child but short of having a hysterectomy, I don't know how much further I can go to ensure it doesn't happen.

Reading this back I sound like a complete cow, I'm not, I promise, I am just so certain that this is the last time I ever want to be preg.

That is totally understandable flumpy, this is #3 for us we def do not want anymore and there is nothing wrong in saying you dont want anymore (some people cant understand this) we planned this one. But after this one comes i will prob go for depo injections or coil again (for me sterilisation you have to be 100% and i am about 2% off that lol) good luck x

Incidentally, vasectomy is much more effective than female sterilization - failure rate quoted as 1 in 2000, versus 1 in 200 for women.

I've been sterilised.
I was told a Mirena coil is just as effective but I got PG with one of them in.
I have an implant too and was told the failure rate with sterilisation was greater in the first 3 years which is why I'm keeping my implant. The implant will be effective for the first two years and after that it'll be condoms for the third year.

Of course I'm not having sex so it's irrelevant but I can't trust it until after the three years.
