Thrush in pregnancy - worried about using Hydrocortizone cream

Hi all

Am nearly 20 weeks pregnant and have suffered with raging thrush throughout this pregnancy. Went to GP early on who prescribed Canesten HC which I have been using topically on and off for quite a few weeks now. I'm now a bit worried about the fact that I've used this cream - any one else been prescribed it whilst pg? Had confidence in GP that she wouldn't prescribe me anything dangerous, but worrying all the same...

Hi, I had a big problem with thrush...got worse after I had a huge dose of anti-biotics, took several months and escalated...

In the end I was feeling really rough -- to cut long boring story short, it's caused by yeast overgrowth in your gut which then spreads...this is basically an imbalance in your gut made worse by hormonal changes, lots of sugar, or eating lots of yeasty things...it can just get out of control. I took Threelac which you can get from lots of places, is safe during pregnancy as far as I know, it's a kind of probiotic. And I ate a "yeast-free" diet which sounds awful but just cut out sugar and try to eat less bread or bread without yeast...and eat lots of olive oil, lemon, garlic and bio yogurt...

if you want to know any more I could go on for hours...I think it's something people don't know much about that affects so many women especially, and sometimes babies and small children...I think taking those creams helps, but only in the short term...

Thanks Leonie- feeling less freaked out now reading your post. Yeahyeah - sounds like you had a hell of a time with it. I have to confess to eating a fair bit of sugar and yeasty things - it does seem out of control and I've had it for months now - will rein my chocolate/french stick habit. Honestly, last pregnancy it was piles, and this one has been thrush - nice!!

i'm another one who's had a terrible time with thrush over the last ten years. used to get it about every month and felt as though i was using scarily large amount of canesten. like Yeahyeah, the thing that sorted it in the end was a probiotic supplement, not cheap, but seriously amazing and worked a treat, called saccharomyces boulardii - ridiculously long name, i know. i got it from nutricare. i also tried to cut down on sugar, no marmite etc and since doing this a year ago, i've only had one brief outbreak, so i started taking the saccharomyces pills again and it vanished.
another case, i think, when treating with canesten etc is sometimes just treating the symptoms not the reasons why you're getting it. obviously if you ony get the odd outbreak, it's not a problem, but yeahheay is right, so many women suffer horribly from thrush...

Just to go on about it a bit more...would def. look into the cause of it, as you don't want to get it super bad...as it really makes you feel quite depressed and spacey...honest! I'm not a flake...promise...have a super easy recipe for soda bread that you can make without yeast, and would cut out all sugar...you will start to feel so much better. I feel like a yeast crusader...but it really is something that can get out of control. There are a few good websites, candidafree.co.uk is very helpful and you can phone them to talk about it. Hope it gets better soon!
