Shopping for new baby - 3 equipment questions!

In John Lewis they insist you can't leave your baby to sleep overnight in the Bugaboo Cameleon carrycot "due to lack of ventilation" - this makes no sense to me - anyone use their carrycot as a moses basket?

Also - all the carrycot/moses basket mattresses seem to be foam covered in plastic - I can see the wipe-clean benefits but is this not a bit sweaty/non-breathable?

Finally - I was going to use a Gro-Bag from birth in a moses basket/carrycot but John Lewis lady says these are for use in cots only, but couldn't explain why - anyone know any more??

I am sure the only reason you can't use a grobag is when a baby weighs less than 7lb.

You may find that baby will prefer swaddling to beging with. DS did and I ended up sending my grobags back to mothercare.

I used our Quinny carrycot for my dd and ds1 and it was absolutely fine.

I dont understand what they mean by lack of ventilation?

As for the mattress, you'll put a sheet on it anyway so it wont really matter.
Gro bags, not sure. I have never heard that you cannot use them in a moses basket or carrycot. I have heard that they may not be suitable for tiny newborns.

We bought a Moses basket at the weekend from Babies R Us and it had mattress included, I was also shocked to find it was plastic! Is it safe then? Feels a bit weird to think we'll be putting our tiny baby to sleep on a plastic mattress - albeit covered with a sheet.

Btw, I'm a nanny and have never put a Grobag on a baby younger than 6 weeks - simply because find it much more effective to swaddle, then they can't wake themselves up with their arms waving around all the time.

think i read on a thread somewhere that grobags are too big for moses baskets. so the bottom of it would get too squashed up or may fold over. or something like that.

used our cameleon carry cot for over night stays on holiday and when visiting my ILs and day time naps at home. (used moses basket sheets on the carrycot matress too)

got our moses basket for mammas and pappas. didn't have a plastic matress. i think they sell moses basket matresses on their own, if you want to change the one that comes with your cot. (just check the measurements online first, i can't remember if they give refunds)

We used a carrycot rather than a moses basket, although not bugaboo and therefore cannot comment on that.

We bought a mattress from mothercare with a removable cover to go inside it.

The whole point of the Cameleon is that they can sleep in it. Bizarre!

Yeah I really got the impression the JL people didn't know what they were talking about.
Thanks TheFallenMadonna - that mattress looks great.
The Grobag thing confused me because I thought the whole point of them was that because the baby's arms go through the holes at the top, it can't wriggle down and suffocate, as it might with a blanket. The fact that it's a bit too long for a moses basket shouldn't matter - you can just fold the end over surely? But I guess I'll just swaddle the little mite to be on the safe side...

cc DS is 10 weeks and was in a moses basket in a gro bag from 3 - 8 days. Bought a swaddling blanket as he kept us awake a lot (think at least every 1/2 an hour during the night) moved him back into gro bag once he started escaping (feet/arms wriggled free) at about 5/6 weeks and is still in a moses basket. I just make sure that the excess gro bag is over the end of the moses basket if that makes sense.
On the bump to 3 website the only time you shouldn't use a gro bag is under 7lb's
re carrycot - don't have a bug, but ds sleeps in the carrycot my parents have when we stay there

I used my Chameleon for my DD to sleep in for the first 6 months.

I didn't use a grobag in it as she was swaddled.

I used my dd's grobag when she was in her moses basket and she was fine.

My moses basket came with a plastic mattress so I bought another one from Kiddicare.com that has a cover that you can remove to wash. It seemed loads nicer then the plastic one.

DS slept in his Frog carry cot. Let's also not forget they only sleep for a couple of hours at a time; it's not like they'll be in it solidly for 8 hours. Sadly.

DS was 6lbs 13oz and coudl have easily slipped into the neck of the John Lewis sleeping bag I'd bought but I think it was just badly designed compare to the Grobag ones.
