Buying a Baby Monitor

Hi all I am 26 weeks and starting to buy things now and prepare for the baby coming, its our first so its all very new and exciting. I am looking at baby monitors and getting really confused I want to by a decent one but don't want to spend £100 if the £40 will do the same. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions.

I didn't see the point in spending money on a camera one as our baby sleeps next door to us and the walls are pretty thin. We got a tomee tipee one and it's crap. Even if you hook it up to the mains, you still have to have batteries in the receiver or it doesn't work and after it's been on for a minute or two there's a noise out of it that sounds like crickets. Does the job but not worth the £50 we spent on it.

I have the Angelcare and I love it. It's not cheap (about £80) but it's really for a peace of mind. DS is my PFB and I wanted a movement and sound one. Since I started using it, I've stopped going up and down the stairs all night long! If you are the anxious sort, I wouldn't advise just the sound one. I would still be checking if not for the movement sensor. I found that really re-assuring.

I got a camera monitor, i found it useful because ds was a wriggler and would get himself into some funny positions in his cot, but i wouldnt say it was a necessity, it did save my legs though as i know i would have been up and down the stairs checking if i couldnt see him.

We got a camera monitor too, after we used a sensor one for one night, and i just couldn't settle because i couldn't see him. It worked better for us as i'm a worrying fusspot, so it saved me from creeping upstairs every ten minutes to see him for myself

We got one for £10 from ebay. I can't remember the make. It has a volume control and you can turn the volume off and just rely on the lights which is handy if you don't want to spend all evening listening to them snoring! I'm glad we didn't spend any more money or get anything more sophisticated, it just doesn't seem worth it.

I got my camera monitor on ebay too, think i paid £50, it was well worth the money i think.
