I was told to come in after my first normal period, which should be 6 weeks post birth.

Yeah right I have since left that GP. Long story.

SOrry, not being very helpful.

I once had one a few weeks after giving birth and it was grim. Are you due one?

beansmum · 22/08/2008 18:16

I had one 6 weeks post birth and was bfing so hadn't even had a period yet.

Lizzzombie · 22/08/2008 18:18

I didn't think having a baby affected your normal rota of smear tests, every 3 or whatever years.
DS is 18 mo, and I've just have my reminder letter.
Not sure what I am going to do with him whilst I have it done!!!

beansmum · 22/08/2008 18:27

I'd never had one before, so I think that's why they did it then.

LittleMyDancingForJoy · 22/08/2008 18:31

I asked my doctor this - he said you have to wait six months for your cervix to settle back to normal, and you should get a call up letter, but if not, make an appointment yourself.

I had one at my 6 wk check, and it was (as Saggar points out) grim!
I would wait a bit after that. After my second child I wiated for about 4 month, and was much less painful.
This thrwad reaminds me that i am due for a smear actually, lovely!

notsoslimnow · 22/08/2008 19:25

oh thanks for those answers im actually not due one for another 2 years, but wondered if giving birth changed the gap between them? cant believe they do them as little as 6 weeks after giving birth.....no thankyou!!! i suppose my real question is whether giving birth changes when you are due a smear?

I have twice had a smear at my 6 week check.

neolara · 23/08/2008 20:23

I think you are meant to wait 6 months as your cervix can show changes simply because you recently gave birth. This makes it hard to work out if there is a problem or not.

cat1978 · 23/08/2008 20:24

I was told I should make an appointment a couple of weeks after my 6 week check up (to allow things to settle a bit) but I'm ashamed to say I didn't and my ds is now 15 months old
I hate having them but I suppose it's one of those 'things' we have to do so I'll an appointment next week

SqueakyPop · 23/08/2008 20:24

But if your 6-week check is normal, then no biggie?

Once the doc has you there with your knees apart, she might as well whip out the speculum.

SqueakyPop · 23/08/2008 20:25

The worst part is making the appointment, Cat

expatinscotland · 23/08/2008 20:26

oh, no, i can't imagine having one at 6 weeks. i was still feeling raw down there.

i had DD1 in december and had a smear test about 6 months later.

a vaginal birth sloughs off a lot of tissue on the cervix.

PinkTulips · 23/08/2008 20:31

i was told 4 months post birth last week.

Elmosgirl · 23/08/2008 20:31

I just had one at 5 months but was told I could have one after 3 months post birth.

cazzybabs · 23/08/2008 20:32

i was told to wait for mt 1st period post child birth = 8 months and still waiting

notsoslimnow · 23/08/2008 22:02

does everyone normally have them every 3 years? because where im from we have them every 5????

I was supposed to have my smear the day after I went to the GP to say "You've just sent me a letter saying I'm pregnant. Are you sure??'

The smear was cancelled and I was told they'd invite me back 3 months after birth.
