cesarian - did you have to take Zantac or Renetadine before surgery??

Hi mamas!! just a quick question please.... im having a c-section in a couple of weeks and my doc prescribed Zantac or Renetadine to be taken before the surgery to limit risk of feeling sick and vomiting. However, they refused to sell it to me over the counter at my local pharmacy... im confused. Have you any experience with this??? thank you wink

I was given an anti-emetic and in the pre theatre area at the hospital before going through to the anaesthetic area to get prepped for surgery.

Never heard of a GP prescribing anything before as this should be dealt with as part of your pre-op meds at the hospital.

All you can do is get the pharmacy to call your GP surgery to confirm prescription is OK.

thanx ladies! what abt eating before op, if i may ask? is that right that you shouldn eat or drink several hours before? sorry to be a pain, but now my date is getting closer, im freaking out!!! aaaaaa

Yes, I had ranitidine, think your pharmacist might be being over zealous as it's safe to take in pg - although shouldn't this be dealt with by the hospital?

Eating... I was meant to be having my cs first thing in the morning and was told not to eat and only have sips of water from about 10pm the night before (I think). There was a delay with emergencies so I had breakfast at 7:30am and nothing from then until the cs at 17:30. The toast in the recovery room was the best thing I have ever eaten!

Forgot to say I was given ranitidine the night before as I was already in hospital. Maybe this is why your gp has prescribed, if they want you to take it before you go to hospital?

i was given it by my hospital at booking in appointment the day before

LiegeAndLief, thank you! my op is scheduled for 11.30 and i was told not to eat or drink anything before going to bed and in the morning. thats quite a stretch for me, cos lately ive been wanting to eat constantly... thanx again - very helpful!!

Not eating wasn't great. Although my ds had to have an op when he was 14 months old, and dealing with him when he was starving was much worse than doing it myself!

diamondmama you will be so nervous about the OP and the fact that your baby will soon be in your arms that eating will be the last thing on your mind

I had nothing for nearly 14 hours (apart from sips of water) and can't honestly say I even felt remotely hungry.

oops tell a lie; i think i had some herbal tea in the wee small hours as i couldn't sleep. I did feel very queasy through the Op though but put that down to the fact that the screen wasn't very high and I could see the whole op reflected in the chrome around the theatre lights

LackaDAISYcal - LOL, you poor thing! i cant believe you saw the whole op!!! you are super brave! i bet you are right abt not wanting to eat, i will be worried abt my hubby though, cos he starts to ask people stupid questions when he is nervous. poor docs, i better worn them...

I stopped looking after a bit; the anaesthetist was doing his lovely, handsome best to distract me as he could see the effect it was having. DH was nearly out of his seat though and actually saw DD being delivered. Isn't it odd that my DH has seen bits of me that I'll never ever see

Daimond, I don't know the answers to any of yor q's, becasue I can't remmeber what happened in my last cs. But I do know no food , or even liquiids ( ??) for a good few hours.

But my main q, is, why has someoen not run through all this with you, so that you know what will happen when ?

My MW and my OB have meetings with me planned, where all this should be discussed, surely ?

good point obs; I went through all this at my appointment at 36 weeks and in my pre-op appointment the day before when I signed the consent forms.

my ob did explain abt medication, but that silly pharmacist confused me by telling i shouldnt be taking the med. re eating: also my doc said no eating or drinkin, so just wanted to see how other mummies did....

Maybe I was in denial - I was starving

My CS was planned for around 9.30am. I had to take one antacid (Zantac) at 10.30pm the previous night and one at 6am the next morning. I wasnt allowed anything to eat or dreink after midnight although i did have a couple of sips of water when I got up.

The antacid tablets are taken to help you not be sick as if you've not eaten or drunk for a while nasty stomach acids build up which make you feel sick to the tablet are taken to neutralise the acid.

I was still horribly sick in recovery both times though but that was just a reaction to the epidural though. They gave me a anti sickness injection after and I felt fine.

My zantacs were given to me by the hospital at my pre op appointment so if they want you to take them, I'm sure they'll provide them to you.

i had my c section at 9am (ish) i was told nothing to eat or drink from 12 midnight the night before i did have rantadine from the hospital to tae the night before they gave me that on my pre admission visit.

i was sick later but that was to do with low blood sugar and it was a v matter of fact sister who gve me super strong vimto saying if i was gonn be sick might as well taste fruit lol -that sorted me .

I had nothing to eat from midnight the night before and my DS wasn't born until 5.30pm the following day. So I had nothing to eat all day long and then I didn't get given anything afterwards either.

Can you tell I'm still cross about it?

I just got given an anti-emetic injection when I had the spinal. I always puke with anaesthetic so I really needed it (although not having eaten for 17 hours I doubt there would have been much there)
