does it matter about the price of the mattress ie the more expensive the safer it is?

I don't think a more expensive one is necessarily safer. However ime a cheaper one (e.g. foam type) isn't very long lasting so may become uncomfy as the baby gets bigger.

We had a foam one first time round which ended up with a dip in the middle. Got a slightly more expensive sprung one for dd2 and it seems better tbh.
