Small bleed followed by days of brown discharge at 22 weeks - anyone had this?

I'm just wondering if anyone has any similar experiences?

I started bleeding on Monday afternoon and went to the Antenatal Day Unit. They couldn't find a reason for the bleed which slowed down pretty quickly and turned into brown discharge which has continued to get lighter but is still noticeable today.

The midwives and doctor I saw listened to the baby's heartbeat which was fine and checked that my cervix was closed which it was. Swabs and a urine sample were taken and came back clear. A scan at 19 weeks had already shown that I don't have a low-lying placenta.

The staff were absolutely lovely and did everything they could to take me seriously and reassure me that they were checking all possibilities (despite quite a lot of waiting around in the unit which I think is inevitable whenever you go to hospital) but I can't help worrying still because I don't have a reason for what's happening.

I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced a small bleed at around this time with discharge lasting for days (I was 22 weeks and 1 day when it started) and gone on to be fine?

I've been googling and have scared myself into thinking that I'm going to lose the baby.

yes!, i had bouts of bleeding with dd until 23 weeks. an early bleed at 11 weeks was due to the placenta tearing away slightly, the later bleeds were never really traced as to what was causing it. everything was fine for me and dd is now 6.5. try not to worry too much, brown is just old blood and quite normal to be that way for a few days after a bleed.

if you get any pain or it happens again though, just call the hospital, always best to get these things checked.

Don't google it whatever you do. That's no way to ease your mind.

I had several heavy bleeds during my first pregnancy, they never found the cause and my son was fine. He's now a very boisterous, lively toddler.

With this pregnancy, I had daily light spotting and periods for the first 5 months. Two weeks ago I had a bloody show, some pre-term labour and had to go in for monitoring. Again, the baby is fine.

Bleeding in pregnancy is worrying but far more common than people think.

Get some rest and try not to worry too much. I know that is easier said than done but it is best for both of you.

Yes at 28 weeks, caused by having sex/polyp. I just wanted to give you at least one real life example of this being harmless. Of course you will worry. Wishing you all the best and a safe pregnancy.

I'm going to stop Googling now and rest and hope that everything is back to normal soon.

Yes, I had a bleed with my eldest.

She's 20 now

The brown discharge is just old blood, so it shows that (even though it was still flowing) it wasn't fresh. So I would imagine the bleeding has stopped, even if the flow hasn't.

If you are worried, though, it is always better to be safe than sorry. Your doctor/hospital are there to serve you.

yes - following intercourse (still at 30 weeks) i always bleed a little... drs don't know why and baby is always fine. I also bleed if I do any vigorous exercise (high impact, like running... just avoid it now). Still, found no actual reason for it. Baby is always healthy and fine.

Thanks again so much for your replies. I'm feeling calmer today as the brown discharge seems to have cleared up and I can feel my baby kicking while I'm typing. You have all made me feel so much beter. Thank you.

I had loads of bleeding in my 2nd trimester - much as you describe.

In my case it was cervical erosions - completely harmless cause. Yours sounds similar actually so it might be that.

The first few times it happenned I would panic but then it happenned so often it became a routine - I could feel who is now my very lively 11mo kicking and wriggling away but I still had to have it checked.

Mercifully it all calmed down in the last trimester - I had a break from people staring up my fanjo and having antiD shots.

Thanks wasabi, it's interesting to hear that you had several of these bleeds, I will try not to panic (too much) if it happens to me again.

It's difficult not to panic I know. The thing is even if its an erosion that causes one bleed you still need to go in and have it checked everytime it happens - just in case it is a more serious cause this time round.

Drove me nuts, especially because I had to hang around even longer or go back in again for AntiD. And they hurt.

If you can feel your lo wriggling around then that should be enough to stop any major panic x

I agree that you should get each bleed checked. I was back and forth to the monitoring unit daily at the end of my last pregnancy and it is a pain but it is such a small part of your life that it's really worth it for peace of mind

Thanks ladies, I will definitely be getting any further bleeds checked. The midwives and doctor I saw last time were great and told me not to hesitate to come back if anything else happened. I definitely agree that a bit of inconvenience is a small price to pay for making sure that my baby is ok.
