Hi

Went for a scan yesterday (I'm 17 + 4) at outr American hospital. Because I'm 35 I was routinely offered genetic counselling, followed by a very detailed scan to determine any risks - the scan was both 3d and 4d and I was quite enjoying seeing our wee boy (knew it was a boy!) in such detail for the first time. The doctor said everything looked great - EXCEPT he saw something on the brain that he said could indicate Edwards'.

He was at pains to point out that there were no other markers, all the other measurements were fine - he ruled out Downs' and Patau (sp?) which was very reassuring, but obviously with Edwards' we are looking at something 'not compatible with life' (Dr's words).

He gave us a 1:127 chance of it being Edwards. Before I new it I was having the amnio done and now I'm waiting. I had terrible dreams all night and woke up actually believeing that I'd had a termination.

Does anyone have any experience of this? Please hel, I feel like I'm going nuts here.

kitkat, dd had CPC and no other markers, I too was terrified of Edwards - they also said at the time it was soft marker for downs. It wasn't picked up until 20 weeks scan. They did a more detailed scan a few days later and thoroughly checked feet, hands, heart etc. The consultant said that she thought there was less risk of Edwards than of miscarrying through amnio, therefore I didn't go for the amnio. dd nearly 5 now and all fine. I do vividly remember how it felt, it was horrible. Hoping everything is OK for you, I am sure they are being extra cautious.

I understand how you feel...

My bloods came back with a adjusted risk of 1 in 13 for Downs so we had the amnio.
The next two days were a nightmare. I spent my time on the sofa terified to move in case I did too much and lost the baby. Terrified that I might have to make 'the Decision.... How on earth would I cope with a termination? I knew I couldn't cope with a disabled baby.

When the lady phoned with the early FISH results I blubbed down the phone to her with relief. We were clear and I had no worries waiting for the full results, just didn't believe there would be a problem.

This is not a nice time in your pg, and I hope that the results are clear, I'm definitely keeping my fingers crossed for you.

(Hindsight tells me that I had my bloods taken at the wrong time and propably created an unusually high risk, but this is different to your situation so I can't comment on that)

Blimey, this must be tough for you. Just to let you know I'll be wishing you luck and hope to hear good news in a couple of days. (((BIG HUGS))))

kitkat9 · 22/07/2008 21:47

You're all so lovely, thanks for your kindness. 2 more days of this then I'll have the FISH results.

It's not a nice time at all, I just wish I could have one pregnancy without any worry!

lots of sympathy. It's a horrible time. But the upside is this - when all comes back normal as is highly likely to happen, you will then be in the nice position of having ruled out a huge number of problems that can arise and the rest of your pg will be so much nicer as a result...

I've been through this too - it's very, very unpleasant. I went to day time cinema to fill the hours.

SixSpotBurnet · 22/07/2008 22:39

Thinking of you, kitkat9. Hope you are getting some sleep.

elkiedee · 23/07/2008 00:51

Thinking of you, hope your news is good on Thursday and will look out for it. Hope you're resting even if sleep is hard.

My combined test (nuchal fold + bloods) has come back 1:120 for Downs, though mainly on account of my age (39) and it's a shock after a much bettter result at 37 with 1st baby - I'm booked for a CVS this Thursday.

gigglewitch · 23/07/2008 01:02

have read all of the thread and like those at the start, I was then totally unable to lurk without posting something.
Just want to say that there are lots of brave ladies here, both in terms of what they have said here and the experiences that they have had. Hat off to all of you.

kitkat9 · 23/07/2008 12:59

Elkiedee, hope you get the result you want - it's very easy for me to look a your odds objectively and say that I'm sure you'll be fine, less than 1% etc - it's just different when you are given those odds yourself - suddenly it seems like a real possibility, doesn't it?

Not much sleep last night but just going to keep busy today and try and put it out of my mind. Probably easier said than done...
