How do I tell the difference between meconium and a show?

Had a sweep yesterday. She said I could bleed slightly for a while - she said pinkish stuff was fine and brown but lots of red was bad.

I had initial pinkish bits. Since then I've had a bit of brown.

The latest wipes (yeah, vile I know) have contained very dark brown in a gelatinous substance. I assume this is ok.

Meconium would be more green wouldn't it? I'd also presumably notice a leak of amniotic fluid which I haven't.

Sounds to me like you've had a show but you could always phone your midwife for reassurance. It's hard to know isn't it?

Definately sounds like a show, wooohooo!!!!

You wouldn't see meconium unless you were losing water and as you've seen no sign I'd go with the show. How exciting! Hope bubs hurries along for you. Good luck xx

Brill. That's what I thought. Fits with what I've seen on the internet.

Am EIGHT days over so fingers crossed the sweep has worked.

Mine started pinky/red, then went brown.

I think that old blood is brown, so its what was there, but has "gone of" before its had a chance to come down with the rest.

springerspaniel · 16/07/2008 16:38

Yeah mine did too. I've seen old blood before, it's just this was really, really dark.

Just searched again on web and got a load of stuff about Hitler. Most odd.

Meconium looks like browny green sludge from my labour experience - there really is no mistaking it for a show/blood (old or new).

Divvy · 16/07/2008 16:42

The web is odd!

springerspaniel · 16/07/2008 16:50

DinkyStinky - it was DEFINITELY not green but really dark. I My memory of meconium is just from when it was coming out of DS1's bottom. It was like tar.

Hmm, maybe I'll take another look.

Sounds just like my show a few months ago, how exciting, good luck

Your waters would have had to have gone for mec to be seen. As you havent I cant be can it.

If you are worried though you could ring labour ward.

And stop googleing it!
