My sister is 25 weeks pregnant with her 2nd child and has just phoned me very distressed because of heartburn. I live accross the road so went to see her a shes really suffering I've given her some antacid tablets and told her to drink milk and left her in the bath with her DH supervising. She ate a peach and the pain came on very suddenly she says it's across her chest and into her back it has lessened slightly with the tablets.

I've told her if it hasn't eased in 30 mins I'd ring NHS direct. But thought I'd see what you mums netters had to say ref remedies or if it's something more serious

She was sick shortly after the pain set in

Agree with what everyone's said re. remedies, especially Zantac (my saviour), but the bit about

'the pain came on very suddenly she says it's across her chest and into her back'

didn't sound like any heartburn I'd ever had, especially the back bit.

Not sure if anyone else experienced this?

Maybe check with dr/mw if it happens again.

Well pain came back with avengance so middle of night trip to hospital. Baby is absolutely fine but sisters liver function is haywire! Took loads of bloods and booked liver scan but as always nothing can be done over the weekend!

She's not in pain now and midwife said it could be liver cholestasis she has had some mild itching but waiting more test results.

I hope it was a one off.

LiegeAndLief · 13/07/2008 21:28

Do hope your sister is ok babalon, this is just what happened to me with the same type of pain, I had cholestasis and pre-eclampsia so hope she is a bit luckier! At least she has been seen now, I'm sure they will soon find out what's wrong with her, really hope it's nothing serious.

becaroo · 13/07/2008 22:02

Get her to go to her GP. I did and was prescribed gastric acid inhibitors tablets ad htye have made a huge difference. Its horrid she has my sympathies.

babalon · 14/07/2008 09:34

Definately Cholestasis not heartburn at all. If anyone has experience of this please let me know. She's very teary and has read this about babies being still born because of this. She needs to contact her consultant and midwife and let them know whats going on. She still needs a liver scan. Bless her it's so difficult to know what to say.

Just seen this thread. Sudden severe 'heartburn' type pain should always be checked out , as it's not always heartburn as your sister has found out babalon.

Another cause of this sort of pain is pre eclampsia, which again can be very serious.

Hope your sister and her baby are fine babalon and she gets the medical help she needs.

Ledodgy · 14/07/2008 09:41

Was her Blood pressure ok or was that haywire too?

Ledodgy · 14/07/2008 09:44

HELLP Syndrome

babalon · 14/07/2008 11:15

bp ok at moment but she had pre eclampsia with her ds1. Feel like a right prat not getting her seen right away but she'd be getting this pain mildly for the previous week or so so I think just asumed it was heartburn

Do the 2 conditions often go together?

OP posts:
LiegeAndLief · 14/07/2008 13:11

I had them both together but not sure if it's common or not! Not come across anyone else who has. Cholestasis is actually less of a problem to worry about than pre-eclampsia - if she has it your sister will need to be monitored and might be medicated, it is also common to induce early at about 37 weeks but this might depend on her hospital or consultant. Think still births are very rare with managed cases.

Pre-eclampsia at 25 weeks might be a bit more of a worry as she might not make it to term but if her bp etc is fine still then hopefully she hasn't got it yet. When did the pre-eclampsia develop in her first pg?

babalon · 14/07/2008 14:04

Not till delivery really. Waters broke and mild contractions so went to hospital where BP found to be through the roof so they induced and had team on stand by in case of CS. She was pretty puffy though for the last few weeks
