I had severe hyperemesis for 3 months and lost over a stone during pregnancy. Once I stopped being ill, I ate more healthily than I did before getting pregnant.

DS came out 8lb 13oz and was early - he was on target to be 10lb or so.

I think it's all genetics unfortunately - DH and I are both tall and neither of us are skinny.

I ate nothing but orange ice lollies for 9 months. felt like crap. lost loads of weight. DD2 was 8lb 7. still is a bit of a parasite 10 yrs later.

Hum, I was 2 weeks late & about 6 lbs 10 oz. My brothers (twins) were 8 days early, & about 5 lbs each. DH & his brother were both about 7 lb at birth.

Anyway, my first two babies were about 6lb 12oz at 39-40 weeks (so fits the theory of genetics nicely).

Except my mother was tiny & a heavy smoker (whereas I am tall, broad-shouldered, never smoked, hearty eater & exerciser).

By the time I got to 3rd/4th babies, they were both exactly 8 lb 10 oz. And each time I gained the same amount of weight roughly as I had with first baby. Only difference.. 3rd-4th babies were 1-2 weeks late, not 1 week early.

So what I'm saying is, except for smokers, I think length of gestation is more important than anything else wrt baby birth weight.

Now, STRETCHMARKS, I am sure they're strongly related to how much weight mum gains, that makes a lot of sense to me.

My mum gained about 65lbs with me and I weighed 6lbs 11ozs. I gained 30lbs with dd and she weighed 6lbs 13ozs. We both started from a healthy normal weight.

Defo in the genes IMO.

I'm so worried about this too... I'm 5'2 and 115 lbs pre pregnancy and dh is 5'9 and lean and solid muscular but not bulging biceps! .
But then my sister is 5'10 and weighs A LOT and his brother is over 6 feet and solid strong build, but not overweight by any means... I'm so worried that those genes from our siblings will creep in and make a huge baby even though we're both smaller people. I'll let you know in just 14 weeks (hopefully!)

DS1 was a 10 pounder, despite me losing two stone initially during pregnancy with severe morning sickness. By the time I was full term I only weighed half a stone more than my pre pregnancy weight.

When pregnant with ds2 I also lost two stone, again with morning sickness. Once that had passsed and I was able to eat normally the consultant told me to watch my carbohydrate intake to avoid another big baby. (Was tested for gestational diabetes but was all clear) I tried and failed rather poorly at not eating carbs and ds2 was 11 pounds and also got stuck. After DS2 was born I was a stone lighter than my pre preganancy weight.

I personally think he would have been big reagrdless of a low carb intake - I'm not planning on finding out how much a third baby would weigh!!

I was told by my consultant at my 37 week scan that very rarely babies will be too big for mum......?

I dedided mine would be, his estimated weight was 9lb 11 at that scan, so i pleaded with him and he agreed to induce. He was born at 10lb at 38 weeks. His cord was 'so thick and juicy' the midwife said that she had to go and get better scissors to cut it with.!

My previous babies had been 8lb 11 and 8lb 14.so bit of a jump. DS3 was induced at 40 weeks as he was meant to be huge, but he was only 8lb 5.

Twins were 6lb 13, 7lb 12..and then 7lb 5 , 7lb 12. so they were big for twins.

Not sure why ds2 was so much bigger, he is however a different 'build' to his brothers-more muscular, broader, and chunkier thighs with a big head. The others are tall and skinny like their dad.

I ate all the same foods with the pregnancies..mainly chicken, bread, full fat milk and tons and tons of potatoes. Thats all i craved.

Hi. I had my booking in appointment today with the mw. We spoke about diets and everything as I'm finding it hard to eat anything at the mo, she said that what you eat will have an effect on things, and for every stone you put on the baby will gain a pound.
She also said that as I gained so much weight with ds (5 stone ) that that would be why my labour wasn't as effiecent as it could have been. Contractions were only 20 seconds long so not much time to do any work. She said this would be due to extra fat around my uterus.
